Ever wonder why so many 64 dimes found?

Doing some reading today and found out silver coinage was still being made as late as April 1966. News to me. Anybody else know of this?

That is rather interesting. Perhaps they were using up the rest of the premade silver dime blanks.

I was kind of wondering why my dime count looked like this.

1960d - 10
1961d - 12
1962d - 11
1963d - 17
1964d - 39

Always struck me as odd that the 64's were so skewed. Now that could explain it.

I found in todays $150 Cwr and $100 Loomis dimes. 3-64 and 1- 46 and then ran across that bit of information. No wonder.

The 1964 (Philly & Denver) were by far the largest mintages of silver dimes. It was also the last year for circulating silver dimes. So although there are nearly 50 years old they are the newest made for circulation silver dimes you will find.

About 1/3 of the silver dimes I find are 1964

I tried to crunch the numbers for '64 and '64D. They wouldn't fit on my old-fart big-key calculator. But, I do know they minted well over 2 billion silver dimes in 1964. That'sa wotta dimes Popeye!

Edit: over 2 billion silver dimes for 1964.

One reason they continued to mint the silver dime was when they changed over to the "clad", all the officials guaranteed that silver would stay in circulation right along with the new version.
It didn't.

I have about an equal amount of silver dimes from 1964 and pre 1964 meaning for every 10 1964 dimes, I have 10 1963 and older dimes too, which tend to be in the 60's anyway.

Ya the majority of the dimes I have are 60-64 as well I would say.

Here's what the #'s say

Total rosies 1946 to 1964 = 6,595,617,673
Total 1964 + 1964 D = 2,286,877,180
Total 1946 to 1963 = 4,308,740,493

So the 1964's were 34.67% of the entire run of silver rosies from 1946 - 1964

Total 1960 to 1964 = 3,812,829,040
Total 1946 to 1959 = 2,782,788,633

1960 to 1964 represents 57.81% of the entire run of silver rosies from 1946 to 1964

I remember reading a thread on here before I signed up that said that if 99.9% of all the silver dimes were gone from circulation (ie. melted, hoarded, etc...) there would still be like 6 million left in circulation. Thoughts like that keep me searching dime boxes.

Maybe it was a big year for loafers with the coin in it. They lived 3 inches from the ground to start with.
