My mom has a friend who metal detects. Well, she just succeed in getting everyone banned at the local fairgrounds. I hunted the heck out of that place last year and never had a problem, and even found my first silver quarter there. The grounds keeper was friendly and just told me not to make a mess. I stopped hunting the property because it had been hunted out pretty hard by me (and many others before me), and the finds were getting few and far in between.
My mom's friend was hassled by the grounds keeper (who is a member of the fair board) about the giant holes that she was digging (these are the only details I know). The friend then proceeded to call the president of the fair board and raised a fuss, asking him for permission to hunt the property after being run off the the grounds keeper. That escalated into a topic being brought up at a fair board meeting, which turned into a new rule of no detecting on fairgrounds property.
So her improper digging techniques, then raising a fuss because she was "unjustly" ran off for making a mess, and then going on a quest to hassle everyone connected to the place for permission has ruined it for everyone else. I just received a friend request from the woman on Facebook, I presume for the purpose of nosing around and trying to find my hunting spots. Good luck with that!
Lately I have been seeing more and more sloppy digging in my area. At a little baseball park by my old house, I came across giant plugs half-assidly thrown back into the hole, with the junk piece of metal laying on the ground next to it. I hunted this park for well over a year and you could see no sign of my digging, but this person dug around a dozen holes like this. At my favorite 'big' park last week I found the same thing, at least they tossed the trash back into the hole instead of right next to it
This park does not allow digging but with being a newer park, most objects are less than a couple inches down so I use a probe and a screwdriver to pop everything out. I saw one plug that must have been a foot in diameter, and several others that weren't placed back into the holes. When I ran my detector over these sloppy plugs, the trash metal ended up being still in the hole. Its just a matter of time until these same idiots get detecting banned at other parks.
In both of the above cases, I had to spend my detecting time going behind someone else and cleaning up their messes. Has the hobby always been like this, with people being careless about digging and getting detecting banned? Or is this just a new trend that is putting this hobby into a downhill spiral?
End of my ranting! On a happier note, I was able to find an return my first two rings to their owners today
