so ive done the headphone mod a few times, but its been years, now i got a new excal and it seems different, took the headphones apart and the speaker is siloconed completerly and thickly, used to be you could just pop them out and put them in a 3m shell.

so questions 1) did they improve the headphones for diving, can you here signals above bubbles??? 2) has anyone cut speakers out and put them in the 3m shell with the new excals????

this will be used for diving freshwater only

I am gonna do a review of Excal headphones vs Bone Conduction headphones and put it in the head to head section.

Stock yellows are maybe the worse underwater head phones made, between the audio not great, and the poor quality of the cable used..... I would rate them close to junk.

They have not changed since 2006 when the yellows were introduced, before that were the blues..a decent set of headphones, than before that 1994 to 1996 they were cheap looking but they were the very best audio.

And yes on the speakers, I made about a hundred sets of water proof headphones with the audiosears 2463, these were the most used speakers on land headphone, Black Widows, Sunrays, Gray Ghost, and so on.. They were great if you were hunting in Discriminate mode, but lacked the audio power to reveal the deep targets of "all metal" mode hunting.

Video from 2012

In 2015 I gave details how to make them since I stopped all detector work

To get the most depth out of the Excalibur one needs the very best headphones possible and using "AM" mode. Turn your audio up to hear the faints the HPs report. This set I called the "Skullies" Piezo's. Which I no longer make or do anymore detector work. Other than my own R & D. I do a lot of testing like this to learn how deep targets report\respond.

You haven't broken any that I have seen.
Hi Guys, I my last few posts, I was deciding if I should send my Excalibur.1000 to the ML repair lab in Penn. , and have them do the repairs on head phones and coil. I‘m sure they would have done a great job. Replace both cables , outer coverings deteriorated I‘ve never seen cable do this before in my life time. So I decided to do the repairs myself. I think my 1000 is about 12-13 years old. Well she works great again but she’s a little rough looking but suits me fine. Still need a sanding, buffing ,and paint job.5450A64A-6DB6-48CF-BAC2-7C4C8FA171DC.webpDFEC9E16-9741-4388-9847-D57FE366E79D.webp8B63CA55-8A54-4D14-89ED-66B80F6FEB4C.webp1EE12901-B519-48B5-B1AE-A3DBB5196A8A.webp1EE12901-B519-48B5-B1AE-A3DBB5196A8A.webpCD3CAB93-7998-423E-912F-38D4BD4DE15A.webp8A842F6A-C070-409D-9B1A-2784956B6134.webp

I think you did the right thing, you will never have to worry about those cables, again. I did coils and head phones cable repairs as far back as 2012, everyone of them the cables are still good. Minelab needs to address the issues with there Excalibur cables. I would almost bet the cables are near the top of the list for send in Repairs!

Hi Joe,
Thanks for replying, I was hoping you would. The coil and head phone ideas repairs came from how you repaired your equipment thanks for the ideas. I just used things I had around house .The black cup on coil is a 1/2 “” pop-up sprinkler head cut down, heated up and placed over the wires and filled with epoxy worked well no leaks yet. The blue tube in the head phones is a woman’s tampon applicator, the tip dIpped in black epoxy, and let dry ,soldered wires and taped , slid into the blue tube and poured in clear epoxy. I probably should of cut down the blue tube a little more.

Joe, I just want to say “Thank You”, and to the rest of the senior members for their time and making the videos and recordings and answering questions to help others get their equipment back up and running A.S.A.P. . My opinion ML does makes quality equipment but… a few items have falling through the cracks as far as quality goes, like the cables and head phones, for the Excalibur, and the caps for the battery pods they crack to easily . They need to work on these issues. The guys in ML.‘s Penn. Lab do a great job answering question but can only go so far , they are a repair Lab to make money. I would have liked to have sent them my equipment but it wasn’t cost effective for me.

So to you and other senior members Thanks again for all the Help.. your time definitely makes a difference.

adventhunter..
