Existence of a 1965 silver dime

On a sister TreasureNet thread site "coins" it is being tossed around that some 1965 silver dimes exist, and that a few guys swear that they have 'One'. Is this for real, and should we be watching for them while CRH'g ? Your comments.

Do 1965 dated 90% silver coins exist. Yes. Are they INCREDIBLY rare? Yes.

It seems like a perennial topic on this board that someone edge searching has found a silver 1965 dime/quarter or a 40% silver 1971 half, and it ends up being just plated or just a weird anomaly.

You've got to weigh the coin to find out. The edge checking method is not completely foolproof, even some modern clad coins end up being punched weird so that they have nearly no copper showing, if the weight is the same (or just slightly off) there is no error.

It could be. If they used a blank from the Silver proof coins made that year, it is entirely possible. It would be a wrong blank error, and very rare. I think they only made the silver coins in San Francisco (S mint mark).

There were no silver proofs until the 1990s. The planchets would come from the 1964 silvers. Silver was made at the P and D mint in 1964, and also at the S, O, and CC throughout history.

This has happened before and will continue to happen as long as humans are responsible for minting coins.....

Not my coin by the way just for an example.....
