Found this a few months back and never really gave it a hard look. I finally got a Civil War Bullet reference book and I think I identified it as a .58 cal Gardiner Exploding bullet. I can see some writing around the base rim of the bullet. I was wondering if this was a common find and what side used the bullet? Thanks for reading. HH

Interesting i never knew such a bullet existed back then did it explode on impact or a air burst ? Nice find . :icon_thumleft:

Was designed to explode 1.5 seconds after initial firing. Exploding bullets were cast from pewter.
They were molded around a copper insert that would hold the powder. Treated powered which hardened was used for a fuse the gun blast would ignite the fuse and the bullet was to explode 1.5 seconds later.

I collect these.... I will give you $150

33,350 of these were issued at chancelorsville.

10,000 were seized by Confederates there.

They were later used at Gettysburg.

The US ordered 100,000 of these.

All that were left in Arsenals were destroyed in 1869.

The 52 cal is SUPER rare!!

If interested in selling hit me up

That is a great find. I have not heard of them being found in this area. The CSA men captured many at Chancellorsville I read. Keep the photos coming.
