Found this a few months back and never really gave it a hard look. I finally got a Civil War Bullet reference book and I think I identified it as a .58 cal Gardiner Exploding bullet. I can see some writing around the base rim of the bullet. I was wondering if this was a common find and what side used the bullet? Thanks for reading. HH

Yep It's a Gardner Explosive. they are fairly rare and sell for about $125.00 to 150.00 or so. They are worth more if you can read all the letters. Usually if one is dug in an area there are more around.
Good find

Thanks for the information. Once Spring gets here we plan on hitting it hard.

You're welcome. Yeah I would hit it hard for sure. By the way the Union made the bullets but the confederates captured a bunch one time. I forget exactly when though.

That is so neat of a find.

I learn something everyday. I never knew anything like this existed during the Civil War.

Thanks for posting.

They were experimenting with all kinds of things during the civil war. There are several types of explosives. The Gardner has a copper insert that the bullet was molded around. the insert was filled with powder and had treated powder for a fuse and was supposed to blow up about 1-1/2 seconds after being fired.

Can you imagine the indignity of getting hit with a chunk of lead like that flying through the air at 1000 feet per second and then having the darn thing explode too boot?
