Yeah yeah yeah.. I said it, "Fairies and Horny Rabbits"... I found them today. And WHAT A DAY!!!!

Today was my last day off and the weather was absolutely GORGEOUS! My wife had to go to work, bless her heart, and I was left to fend for myself for the whole afternoon. Now what do you think *I* did? Being a diehard (if still somewhat wet behind the ears) metal detectorist, I grabbed my gear and didn't look back! Jumping in the car and heading off to a nearby town that I've recently been plotting to peruse. Just four days ago we here in Central Kentucky had between five and twelve inches of snow to fall, and while most of that has melted off due to the spring like temperatures and sunny days, the ground is still somewhat soggy. With this in mind, and not really looking forward to wet knees all afternoon, I decided to check out the Tot Lots of a couple of city parks and a couple of elementary schools (after school let out for the day).
I arrived at the first small park in my neighboring town of Winchester, a little after 1:00 PM. I had
made but one pit stop on my way there, to grab some lunch, and I was raring to go. I geared up and began sweeping my way from the parking lot to the Wood chips... Old habits are hard to break.. detect every step going and coming. I did get a BUNCH of targets too, mostly trash that I could see, but a couple of pull tabs and a bottle cap along with three pennies before I got to the Tot Lot. So much for not having wet knees, at least it was ONLY one knee, and it was merely damp. In the Wood chips I kept finding pull tabs and bottle caps as well.. and pennies.. and dimes.. and quarters!... This small park is not exactly the cleanest I've seen, but that could be partly due to the neighborhood it was in though. I'll not say it was a bad neighborhood, but let's just say I wouldn't venture into that park after dark. Across the street from the park I saw at least seven different vehicles stop and "visit" with the residents of one house.. before moving on. Hmmmmm... Don't think they were sharing lemonade if you know what I mean. <shudder> But I kept my interest, if not my full attention, on my detecting. You can't help but have your "radar" on in a neighborhood like that though. But as I said, the detecting was GOOD! I found about four bucks in clad, and a couple of metal buttons from someones jeans or whatever. Before long I was headed back to the car and ready to check out another park.
In another part of town, and dare I say a more relaxed atmosphere, I checked out the second park of the day. Again, sweeping the entire distance from the parking lot to the Tot lot, I found several coins. At this second park though, I was not alone. Being somewhat closer to a grade school and later in the day (almost time for school to let out), I was accosted by about a dozen preschoolers and their mothers/nannies/babysitters. Well, not "accosted" maybe, but I did get to play the pied piper again. "Hey Mister! What you doin' ? " "Mommy? What's that man digging for?" "Is there treasure buried here???" Ah yes.. You gotta love'm And once again, the magic pull tab eventually bored them away. After watching me dig up nothing but pull tabs for four or five times, most went back to playing and forgot all about me.. most of them.. one little guy just wouldn't lose interest.. even after I shared with him all the pull tabs I was finding. He thought they were "cool". His mother just shrugged her shoulders and grinned. What can you do? Oh well, even though I was finding "pull tabs" left and right, what was really in the holes were coins and other goodies that I deftly palmed into my finds bag while showing "another pull tab" to my halfpint hangers on. Clad, buttons, charms, one earring (tiny little thing, probably not silver, at least no stamp)

.. and an ink pen.. and a pencil. I swept my way back to the car after making a complete circuit of the Wood Chips.. at least the munchkin brigade stayed in the Tot lot. I found a few more coins on the way back to the car... now the knee is wet!. Oh and I found a finger. Halloween was how long ago?
Now it's after 3:00 PM, and school has let out, all the kiddies have gone home or left the schools anyway.. I found myself pulling up to the first of two elementary schools and a HUGE Tot Lot. This school had a very large and well equipped playground, new woodchips, lots of swings and slides and monkey bars. This could be GOOD. And it WAS! I found nearly as many quarters as I did pennies and dimes.. several nickles tossed in too. I found the usual pencil ends too, you know the little metal barrels that hold erasures, and some pull tabs.. just can't seem to shake them. One unusual item was a spoon. A spoon? Yes.. a Spoon. A cheap Chinese Stainless Steel tea spoon. Go figure. I found a bunch of Abe's some Isenhowers, some Jeffersons, a couple of Washingtons.. and one Chuck. Chuck E Cheese that is..token.. mouse coin. I found a foreign coin too.. a very heavy coin.. a $100 coin! Too bad it was 100 Pesos.. *sigh*.. and "Old" Pesos at that.. not worth as much as the one Chuck E Cheese Token probably. I found one other interesting coin at this particular locale as well.. another Washington.. but this one wasn't a quarter. This George Washington Coin was one of the new Presidential Dollar Coins.. though it's a little discolored by the acids in the wood chips, it's STILL a DOLLAR coin!

Oh.. and I found a heart! Two actually. One heart was a charm from a pair of shoes, Sketchers I think, the other was a key chain "fob" I thought it looked awfully familiar when I found it, and when I got home later I saw why, I'd found one just like it, albeit minus the chain and clasp, a few weeks ago...in a different city.

My finds bag was starting to get heavy.
Moving on to the Second Elementary school on my list, and the last location for today's adventures, I found another nicely equipped playground. The wood chips were a bit older, probably a couple of years at least.. promising! Of course I found lots of trash accumulated there as well, pull tabs, pencil erasure barrels, bottle caps, paper clips, buttons, pieces of toys, zipper pulls, snaps, one cheap little chain (bracelet?) I found another token.. not a Chuck this time but one from a competitor for the pint sized pizza parlor aficionados.. Mr Gatti's Pizza or "Gattitown". Where a kid can be a kid and parents are numb from exposure... the lights, the noise... Anyway, it was neat to find the token.

All the while I'm finding coins left and right as well.. pennies, dimes, pennies, dimes, quarters, quarters, oh.. and Quarters! This lot was loaded! Then things took a turn for the.. well.. what exactly it would be a turn for, or towards.. but the finds certainly raised my eyebrows. One Key Fob.. HUGE.. was for MY HOME TOWN!.. or was from there anyway.. Lexington Kentucky..

the Fob was a promo item I'm sure, advertising Keenland Race Track (Horse Racing). Pretty cool.. but then there was this Rabbit.. a VERY "Horn"y rabbit. It was down under the wood chips about four inches.. He declares that he's "...worse than you"

And if that wasn't bad enough.. I found a couple of Fairies too ! Or maybe they're "nymphs" Not sure really, perhaps someone out there can identify them and let me know.

With the fairies in the bag I knew it was time to call it a day, besides, my tank was letting me know it was dinner time. So I put my detector away and headed towards home, beaming, it had been a VERY good day indeed. I used to think that Tot Lots were for people with no other places to hunt, that they were just being "lazy" by not having to dig in the dirt for their discoveries. I've changed my mind on all of that, perhaps these Tot Lot guys (and gals) are on to something here? Constantly replenishing treasures, little or no digging, mostly dry ground.. I could get to like that. Of course you still run the risk of rug rat parades but that might happen anywhere too. Yeah.. Tot Lots are worthy hunting grounds... especially if they've not been hunted in a while, or at all. Yeah Baby!
I made a haul today, trinkets, trash and a pile of cash! Over $18.00 in clad, over 238 coins, not counting the scrap metal, key fobs, pull tabs and all the other targets that I found with my detector. A very good day.

Here's all the coins,

Frodov,
Good God, what a haul!!! That's a whole lot of digging Man. Congrats on the clad count. Also, a 10 year old Chuck E Cheese token, not bad. Is that a piece of sushi right above the pencils??? If so, don't eat it. That stuff has to be fresh. :D
Great hunt!!!

"Rug rat parade"? Man you got a way with words. Looks like you cleaned up those parks, but like you say they replenish themself. Got to love it.

Great day in tot land! Excellent day I would say.

Hey Frodo, nice batch of clad! Anytime you can pay for the gas with your finds is a great day. Sounds like there was very little competition at those tot lots so be sure to hit them again in a few weeks.

What did you do Frodov, hit the big time...lol?
