he said -his famous quote ""I fear we have only awakened a sleeping giant" --once pearl harbor was attacked and he found out that the carriers were not there or sunk (which was his "real target" --the air power not the battleships * )-- yamamoto knew that if he sank the carriers and took out the land based aircraft in hawaii --that the rest of the US fleet at pearl harbor was basically "target practice"-- he knew that the fact that the american aircraft carriers were lurking about and that he did not know where was a dire theat to him and his carrier task force and so he was forced to leave the area and go back to japan.

yamamoto knew that air power would be the deciding factor in the war to rule the seas during WW2--

oddly he was killed by us airplanes --once the "magic" code breakers cracked the japanese code and figgered out he was doing a "inspection tour" later on in the war near the solomans in 1943 ( FDR personnally demanded that they "get yamamoto"-- so they put a "hit team" on him -- however to cover the fact that they had cracked the japanese code --the usa sent several more fighter sweeps into the area in which they killed him as "cover" in the following days to make the "hit" look like a random event , as well as "leaking" a false "report" that coast watcher spys had seen him in the area and had tipped off the usa about him.--( a team of 18 ---p 38's with a hand picked select "crack" set of pilots were sent up to kill him) -- ( however only 16 of 18 -- P 38's actually took part in the attack -- attacking the 6 escorting zero fighters and 2 transports-- outnumbered 2 to 1 they never stood a chance .
