fantastic 1640 8 reale cob found I'm massachusetts.

Did some door knocking today first house first permission was told have at it after a couple hours and an indian, a barber dime ,and a merc. I started swinging near where they had the gas line marked that seemed like it eas dug at an earlier time, about 4 to 5 feet from the line i got a booming hit at about 4 inches and this was it .Not sure if it's real or not but got my heart pumping about the size of a half dollar kinda heavy and why would there have been a hole in it then filled

Im not an expert but it looks more legit than a lot of others Ive seen posted. I dont think there dug much in massachusetts though.

Looks legit. If it's real then it's from Spain's Mexico mint. Strange part is the plug in the hole. Con men in the early days of numismatics would sometimes plug the holes of old and rare coins in the hopes of selling them for more money. Coins with holes often were worth less to collectors then intact coins. I know in the very early days the men used lead to plug the holes. They would either pound the lead into the hole with a hammer or they would heat up the coin and let the lead melt into the hole. Bet that coin has a very interesting tale to tell.

Oh my! that is an awesome and huge cob. I don't think that I have seen one that big before. Any chance you can weigh it on an accurate gram scale? Congratulation on a killer find.

Maybe not holed, and plugged, maybe a "natural" planchet flaw.

After a second look, and more thought, I believe planchet flaw is the more likely, as if it were a plugged hole, meant to deceive someone, as suggested above it would have been a "better job", less noticeable.

Great find, I believe you got your first banner.

I know my scales weight a little lite but according to mine it's 26.6grams. Didn't mean 27.7.ill stop the typos. It's 26.6 on my scale

Wow, that is something I will probably never find in the bottom of a hole down here! Also, did you ever get a positive ID on the one you found last August?
