No matter how I cut it, this hobby is the most interesting thing I've ever done.

Such a WIDE range of interesting things that come to light!

Like these, from today.

BUTTON1.jpg BUTTON2.jpg

All I can make out on the back is "Treble Gilt"

HARP1.jpg HARP2.jpg

The only marks on this harp are the design notches on one side. I would think this just has to be a recent drop? Wouldn't the center piece rust away if there was much age?

STARTHING1.jpg

STARTHING2.jpg

Then, there was this star thing. Looks like it was plated. About 8 inches down.

Feel free to guess. :dontknow: LOL

Here's the overall.

Thanks for peeking!

Never know how fast something rusts underground. Depends on soil, chemicals, rain. Those coins found nearby? Dates?

I would say that your "star thing" is a bridle rosette and a very nice find! The ones I have found have all had a diameter of about 2".

I agree with your thoughts. If you take the time to enjoy it as a hobby and think about who lost the item, how they might have lost it, and how long ago they lost it, it is a very interesting hobby. It's all about the thrill of the hunt and recovery of the past.

The coins are just clads and they came from an adjacent field.

Yeah, that's what makes me think it might be a recent drop. The soil was VERY sandy.

Kinda neat, huh.

I was thinking that someone would come on and tell me that I have NO clue what I got there and that it would turn out to be a banner find! Even if I didn't realize what I had. LOL

Interesting, a Rosette huh? That is fascinating.

Thanks!

You are so right about that. I didn't start detecting until I was in my late '40's - wish I'd discovered this wonderful hobby years ago. I've gotta a lot of time to make up! Cool finds by the way!

I found one of those harps this past spring at an old house and the center piece was intact. I assumed it wasn't that old, but maybe it is because it was deep.

I understand completely. If I'd had one of these things when I was a kid, I would've majored in history! :)

Thanks!

Anyone have any ideas as to how to go about dating the harp? :icon_scratch:

I think Snoopy has the answer:

If anyone would, it would be snoopy! LOL

But, this one does appear to be made a bit more sturdy. The metal also seems to have a bit of that greenish patina seen on old pennies. Just trying to figure out how old this might be.

Thanks!
HH!

I used to have a good contact on these, but he changed his email. They have been around for hundreds of years, & only changed very subtly. Although if you play it whilst on a long journey it will ward off the evil eye.
