Just a guess on my part, but I would say it is some sort of valve since it is threaded on both ends. Are both sides of it the same size? If not, it could be a "reducing" valve.

With it threaded at both ends, my thaught would be it's a gas, or fuel line valve.

The small end looks like it would take a flared copper line. It could be a valve that hooked up to a fuel oil tank outside. Thanks all.
