Feeling discomfort about dumping.... please advise!

Ok so - I have been doing this for about a year now and I have had a decent amount of success. One problem I am running into is that while i have a good supply bank and about 4 dump banks with coin machines, all of those machines have the $100. half bags. While I never dump more than $500 at a time in any one bank (and I rotate the banks so I am never in sooner than every few weeks), I always feel kinda bad because the teller has to come out and change the bag 5 times for me. I dont understand why the maximum is so low since the bag is like 1/8 filled at $100, but I am trying to not become an annoyance, and the embarassment I feel keeps me from a much higher turnover rate, which I would like. So I am doing maybe 2 boxes every 3-4 weeks at most and the only reason it's not more is this factor.

Does anyone else feel this way? How much do you bring in at once? How often do you dump? Does anyone else know of a Northeast bank that accepts more than $100 in a bag?

Sounds like your dumping 1/2s at a TD. I think they intentionally put a small bag to discourage what you are doing.

I use TD bank as well and the bag fills up after $100, but I usually talk to the tellers who change it and thank them every time, they tell me, "No problem"

They know I CRH since I have 2 supply banks and 1 dump bank. My 1 supply bank only supplies me with half dollars since I never asked for other boxes since I don't want to push my luck. The 2nd bank is TD bank which is my supply and dump bank. They supply me with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters as long as they have enough for their business customers. (I've only been rejected twice in the year and a half I've been doing this Heavily (2 boxes at a time, sometimes dimes, but usually nickels/pennies.

I have never done quarters yet.

The tellers all know me in there and just the other day a teller dropped a full half bag on the floor and I heard silver. I asked if I could swap normal half dollars for the ones I collect. She asked me if I was looking for silver(she was obviously knowledgeable on silver half dollars) I said yes, and she let me swap out right in front of her, she even helped me. For $14, I scored one 90% and thirteen 40%ers. She had no problem with it either.

Just be nice to your tellers, have conversations with them, let them know you CRH, and thank them. Possibly bring them in a box of sweets or something, they'll remember that, and you'll feel more comfortable there.

they only put a $100 bag in because a larger bag would block the coin return tube. Let them know up front that you have a few hundred to dump, most of the time they will just keep the machine open for me and change the bag without locking the machine back up only to take it back out again. Find one where you have a good rapport and they will probably not mind. I have one teller who doesn't mind taking 15 min or so to help me with the machine because we shoot the $hit about baseball/football and it breaks up dealing with cranky customers.

Plus rather than doing normal transactions, they get to stand beside the machine and do nothing but change the bags. I'm sure most tellers don't mind.

I got told from one bank I dump at that they would only take halves in 1000 dollars incriments in the future. I think this was to make it harder for me even though they said it was because they had to hand roll all loose halves below that 1000 dollar mark but 1000 dollar bags could be sent straight back to the fed.
I changed over to pennies and stopped taking halves in now. They said pennies were not a problem in any amount because they just bagged them and shipped them out. They said that until I acctually started bringing them in! Now I get the roll of the eyes and hear the huffing and complaining in the back room.
My thoughts? I really don't care if they don't like it. I make money in this hobby to supplement my normal income. I now in my full time job I have things I don't really enjoy but I still have to do it. Seems to me if they don't like running coin through their coin machine they need to find another job other than bank telling.

Well... it's not that anyone has ever complained to me about it, or given me a hard time - just the opposite, in fact. It's just that *I* feel bad taking up their time, but I guess since I do spread it out and not hit any one branch more than once every 2 months, and if I want to continue the hobby, I had just better get used to it

Why not roll up your dumps? Wraps are free from banks or at very least super cheap if you buy a box online. That way you can re-roll $500 at home in about 15-20 minutes and they are very easy to dump. No waiting for the machine to be changed out every $100, taking 30 minutes to dump $500 and feeling bad about it. Just bring in the rolls in a shoebox and drop them off, get your cash fast, rinse and repeat. :thumbsup:

That might not work. In my area, banks that have coin counters will NOT take rolled coin - it has to go through the machine. Might be different in your area.

I guess the wife and I are lucky. We dump 2k in halves and 1k in dimes every week at our dump bank. They only accept loose coin and ship out when they get 1k in any coin. I simply bring it in the day before they are do to ship out and that way my coin isnt sitting around taking space up in their vault. My tellars are very happy and have no problems with it. We also give them candy and treats and the 4 and 5 year old color pictures of the "money ladies" for them to hang up by their teller drawers..

my banks counter fills at 1k for halves, 2k for dimes and quarters, $400 for nickels, and $100 for pennies...so, if you can find a bank like mine that would be great. i never feel guilty for dumping up to 1k at a time...keep it up and hh!

From reading the above, my conclusion is that every hunter has their own method. Yes there are times I feel like a pain in the butt to the tellers, however I have tried sweetening the pot for them (literally) from an idea I saw on this forum. I use 5 to 6 branch banks of two companies in my area. There are times I dump at each as well as obtain from each. I have made sure to provide good chocolate candy to my regular tellers and even sugar free to those I know can not use sugared stuff. Most of them smile when I come in. I have done this for about a month. Secondly, I do not do 1/2's. I tried that for a couple of times in this area and ended up with many, many of them marked by someone and after $1500 worth of bags(not boxes) and the additional trouble of them I switched to dime boxes, nickel boxes and penny boxes which are readily available at almost all of the branches.

Last week I spent a total of about $10 in Billion Dollar Bunny (cool Easter candy)bars for my teller friends along with some sugar free Resces Pieces for others. To me it has been well worth it. At one branch they take the dime boxes back for an exchange with out even counting them because I have built trust with them. The others still count the rolls but most even say they are sorry for taking the extra time. I tell them that it is no problem and that I understand. That is the truth and I don't blame them for counting.

The bank that I dump nickels and pennies has a jam up good coin counter and I have filled the bags numerous times during dumps. So far no real grips when they have to change out the bags. I make sure to keep them well stocked in candy. This is also the bank that has the machine that culls the silver coins from the other coins. So far they have provided me with 11 silver dimes, a steel '43 penny which was rejected and 3 silver quarters(whoopie). Unfortunately the machine does not take 1/2's to get culls from. I probably need to keep more money in their bank since it is not my main bank, LOL.

Guess my situation is a little different. As a side job, I empty out all the vending machines at the mall I manage. I swap out all the bills with halves, which well exceeds $1000. There are also 2 banks on site that I have a good relationship with as tenants. All the machines produce a good amount of silver. Guess I've got a good thing going.
