Ridge with older trees ( not big really ) but just more sinewy trees and other shrubs.
Not very steep but incline ground nevertheless.
It was in January, no pics yet sorry. Very wet ground ,can't go yet to snap Pictures.

The Stone is overall 18 by 20 inch. Did measure with tape. Almost even square.Surface toward sky is a little rough and moss is growing. Sticking on average 2.5 inches above ground.
The stone is on the ridge ( old fence line ? ) , North side of stone pointing almost North.
The Signal spot is almost exactly SW direction. Middle ground direction between South and West.
Trajectory of signal from stone is Not quite parallel to the old ridge stretch direction

Between 9 and 11 feet from the Stone marker is the Assumed Spot.

No other stones anywhere within 12 yards or even more. Yes there are many other immersed stones around but Not one like this Almost square.
No big or any trees within 20 meters. Just very tiny here and There.
The area is the Top of the slope. Old pasture looks like. Just smaller trees farther than 15.or 20 m.

Our colleagues had made an attempt only 3 feet or less from my Assumed spot. Looks like quite a long time ago. They didn't dig much, I think

Spot is not detectable by Copper AT ALL. Copper takes me 2 meters or more sideways.

Anyway, these PERCENTAGES are the Strenght of Emanation FROM the immediately surrounding landmasses That manage to Sweep through whatever object/ Alloy is at the 10th or 11th foot ( plus expected stone arrangement underneath).and Continue Upwards through the Surface.

In other words the Strenght of typical Local Setting for each Element that Reverberate against the Container or Object ( plus stones underneath ). In % remaining afterwards

Place is Institutionalized Natural Habitat . But I can show it to people eager to test their equipment or methods for Comparison work.

What is an “Old Ridge”? Are they not all pretty old? Sounds like you may have found a property corner. It was very common to set stones at corners. Sometimes they are “marked” early in the survey of the US, they set “mounds and pits” for corners. That practice did not last long because they were not durable enough. The “pits” were accessories that could be used to ascertain the corner location should it become disturbed.

Well maybe I said old ridge because the other stones ( but way more edgy in shape ) that begin 15 or 20 yards away are even more sunken into the ground.
So if this stone plate was set as a corner boundary, is it likely they buried some Lead or other metallic object into the Pit at 10 feet from the Stone?
And it just remained there not touched by any more contemporary person?

Imagine with your metaldetector! The following hypothetical scenarios:
1) if you buried An Aluminium ( or Al- predominant) 30 to 50 gram piece , at a depth of 16 inches,
Would you be getting a slightly more powerful Aluminium signal than you are getting Gold or Silver one?
I don't think so. At least not in my book.
Worst case scenario = Their signals Would be Equal.

2) if you buried at 16 or more inches a Predominantly Iron or black steel compact Cylinder or rod with a mass of say 15 OZ,
Would you be getting a signal That tells You The material is Closer in Display of Properties to Lead than to Silver or Gold or Tungsten.
Or at least Way more Lead-resembling than Aluminium-resembling?
I dont think so!
BIG CAVEAT: you might get more Pb-resembling than Au or Silver- resembling signal because there are serious IMPURITUES of Lead within this old Steel piece!
Or any serious Lead content.
But then, Wouldn't the metal detectirists have felt it and dig it out??
Also, Another smaller chance you may get Slightly Stronger Pb signal than Gold or Tungsten
Is : If it is a more bulky Old agricultural piece of component or old domestic Piece of a stove or something...
But Then, SOMEBODY out of the say 6 to 10 people with good metal detectors Would have become intrigued by that Spot in the last 60 years!
At least 1 person!
Also, Guaranteed if you placed Silver coins in a more Amorphous structure container and after 12 or more decades, the Silver has become at least minimally exposed to the Soil,
No way you Would be getting A Pb signal that stands at 71 % strengh BUT Register SILVER SIGNAL only at 45 %

So this Is An Anomaly present, I suspect at about 9 to 11 feet from the Stone South Corner.
A horshoe? I doubt it.

You have to Take this strange correlation: on one side 71 strenght Pb and 78 % strenght Iron and on the other side only 45 % strenght for Ag and only 57 % for gold and Putting into perspective of Into What correlation it translates When viewing your Detectir's Display.
Because I don't know where your Diapazones are for the diff. Elements.
I don't understand your detector how it works. Or RATHER how it Translates what's under the surface.

My conclusion: Any of these small CAVEAT potential factors Could have been the case.
BUT NOT if you add another "Strange " factor: The signal is Originating from a Spot that is from a Straight trajectory that is pretty much 10 feet from the Southern-like Corner of this Flat looking Stone! Spot is Exactly SW in other words.

( however my compass was Getting Inertia deviation readings because of mineralizatoon somewhere within that place) But i still knew where Is North plus minus 25 degrees.. Visually based.

Also, There is evidence that they did look for something On same SW side of the Stone.
But 3 feet away.

Wanted to add, I just don't see a logic why would the original Land deals Oversight Officer in the 1830s Or 40s put this big stone plate AND need to put a 2 lb Piece of Lead, or say 2 pounds of Cupro-iron Piece In the ground ... like 10 feet from the stone.
Or instruct 1 of the owners to put it there JUST IN CASE the 2 neighbors decide to start fighting about the border line??? In the future.
In order for the State representative to do what? To go and tell the arguing parties : " Look, Here i burued this Piece of metal here even though you moved the 150 lbs Stone plate that was the Main border marker "

These parcels, before they were PARRTIALLY turned into arable land in the 1840s and 1860s at the latest, They were 60 % or more forested land. So if they were bought mainly to be used as firewood/ furniture making Lots, There was No Need to fight with your neighbor!
There was Plenty of WOOD for both neighbors.

Also, if they were bought so the owners could have a piece of More Secluded land to build a Log cabin and maybe a structure for animals , It would be the most stupid thing to Find a reason to Fight with your neighbor...

Furthermore, even if they Did Put a big 2 to 5 pound of Lead chunk, It would not be emanating stronger Pb Signal than The Silver signal Because Silver DOES easily ( granted no numerous Stone obstructions right next to each other ) "ENTWINE "itself or Merges itself with pretty much any Other gray Color metal that is good size and positioned in a Compact enough Space, Simultaneously.

Wires and cables are differentiate story, Electric pole Glass insulators and Bakelite pieces are Totally different story.
But I believe this Piece of Land is at least 30 years older before any Such early Modern components would have arrived there.

Also no Ancient 1800s Telegraph wires passed right through there. I verified that.

You are arguing with a surveyor. I just gave an opinion. “original Land deals Oversight Officer” That’s not how it worked at least not out in the PLSS country that was settled in those days. Not sure about the colonial states. What state or country are you in?
I don’t know anything about all these metals your are talking about. Sounds like it could be a strategic mine that would support an entire country! Sorry you’re just throwing A Lot out all at once.

Well I understand your thoughts on this.
" Original Land...." its not Exact historycal words I used.

I didn't know they called them surveyors or with other similar terms.
I Just tried to use common words to describe such a person of Authority.

North Illinois , Between Kane ,Cook and Du Page counties

But I had no idea you know those groups of people sent out by the Government to Map the new unknown Areas , I would never have thought they had time to shape ( or find proper shape ) big stones like that and put them at Important Criss-cross places.
But it totally Makes sense to me now!

Because 1 of the few only main roads there in the 1850s , north of todays Hwy 20, did stretch through some higher Plateau/ mound places. High ground basically. Like you mentioned.

Look up some days if you want " Fox Valley " area because there were in the 18th century Native American tribes here AND I THINk there are great Gaps in events for late 18th and very early 19th centuries here.
You know they fought and the Native tribes were defeated and forced out and so on,
But I started reading a 100 plus page very old printed like in the 1890s accounts of what had happened in 1810s to 1830s right here But I felt a lot of Information is missing. But some Old Stones nearby Literally don't even Resemble 19th century. They seem older.

They didn’t typically carry in stones. They would use what was available to them in the area.

You mentioned unique stone oriented north, set into the ground along a fence line.

Could be a section corner or 1/4 corner.

Be easy for you to look at a map to verify.

Yes this 18 by 20 inch stone is more unique and Straight shape than any stone I have seen anywhere else. Just don't know how tall Into the ground is
...
Well, there is no leftovers of any Barbed wire or iron fence poles onto that stretch ( the ridge).
There are some iron poles and barbed wire segments ( probably early 20th century ) like 100 to 150 yards away. I think i saw some.

But not onto this ridge line.

According to the oldest 1861 map that I know is clear enough, the Spot is totally within a single 80 acre land. Quite into the Midst of the Parcel.
( If the map is Proportionately drawn to the only stream and other surroundings. If it is correct map, I mean. )

But the 80 acre land may mean nothing if the Marker is from the 1700s up to 1850s.

I think the Stone position is something close to that picture:

Well who knows. It may not be a land corner. However original corners can be found hundreds of feet from modern retracement surveys. They were not using GPS back then. They were dragging steel chains. It sounds like you are into dowsing or some other nontraditional method of finding metal objects. The Government Land Office (GLO) and USGS did set control monuments on high points to survey the topography of the land. Other than traditional dowsing rods, I know no more. Just modern metal detectors, gut instinct and experience tromping around following people’s footsteps, following around their “treasure” notes and sketches to arrive at a specific cross cross location

Yes I only use a Pendulum.
This particular Spot i am not gonna touch. It will be difficult to get permission. In fact I don't know if I apply online at DNR , how stereotypical ( nonconvincing ) my reasons for request may be viewed as and what % chance of being turned down.
But The thing is - I use 3 overlapping dowsing methods - and
1) I know this is relatively deep , at least 20 inches.
2) with purely Mental dowsing and Iron or Pb witness , I get quite strong pull toward the 10th feet spot But I Don't even Register the same -assumedly True Spot with neither Silver, Nor Gold, nor Copper, not even Sn. D
3) So i decided this spot it's for Comparison Notes of mine.
But have great Curiosity what a 2 box or other maybe Impulse induction detector would show...
4) But there are no big trees there. There is a 14 to 16 inch diameter Alone tree and it is about 5 to 6 meters away. That's it. All other trees are way farther away.
5) So I should assume for Topographic measurement reasons, if the Government inserted some alloy in the ground at that pretty much highest point of the hill,
It should have been after 1940s ??
Sorry for sounding stupid but I had to ask that.
Have a good day!

Highly doubtful they placed any alloy in the ground, if that is what it is. Could just be an ordinary rock.

I read today about the 1/4 Corner section stone markers. It says they used to place them at every 1/2 mile distance.
For example dividing a 640 acre Section into 4 properties.

That's all I read.

I come from a region with a lot of pasture, divided in small fields. It's the custom to put a big flat stone above the ground on one corner between two fields.
It has two goals. Defining the property limits and allowing to climb over the fence.
Pasture are sometimes muddy. If you want to go over, you just have to put a feet on the hard flat rock, the other on top of the fence. And hop, you land also on a flat surface on the other side. Easy even with muddy boots.

The last reason it is on the corner, it's because that mean you are further away from the livestock. You don't want to be caught on a fence too close to bulls or rams.

I will take a picture of the stone when less muddy the 20 min walk up to there.
But this stone plate is sticking only about 2 and a half inches out of the ground.
And itself is not quite on the highest point of the meadow but 3 to 6 meters below.

I came, not as much mud as I thought.

One consideration,
Forgot my GPS again.
But the Corner i Think Is SW, may actually be pointing Straight WEST.
because I can't very well see the road from here.
But long side of meadow is at least 250 yards long.

Pic # 4 is taken from the Assumed Spot. And it is the highest point of the stone. But that's currently how it is sunken after many decades.

Just looks like an ordinary rock to me. Are there not rocks in your area?

Its hard to explain. There are places with very few rocks and there are areas around here with quite a few.
But alongside ridges are most found ( but again not everywhere )
I took 3 pics of other nearby stones but I have problem with uploading when done from phone gallery.

Then if you think this kind of square looking stone Was Not Intentionally put there,
Why is there Not a Single stone OF ANY SHAPE or size upward starting 4 yards onto the plateau section alongside at least 150 yards out of its 250 yards lenght?? I didn't walk the entire meadow.

But on the other ( Northern slope ) some stone arrangements again are present.

The plateau meadow was arable land and therefore is cleared of any stones?? Maybe! But i don't think that's the reason.
Why?? Because Just 200 yards to the side there is a humongous 600 yards by at least 400 yards Contemporary arable land that is right now being prepared AND there are all kinds of stones of different shapes onto the surface. And sticking out too.

I grew up in Bulgaria walking 4 stray dogs into the hills above town till i would almost collapse from hunger.....and I can discern between a Naturally sitting stone and one that was Intentionally put there! Even if 16 decades ago.
Sort of a Natural surveyor :))

I agree it just looks like a rock. It doesn't look particularly significant or intentional, but who knows? What's the question, again? You think the stone marks something, as indicated by your pendulum. Have you tried digging it up?

You guys may be right. It may have stood there for thousands of years! But It is sitting right on what I see as a smooth ( not steep ) natural ridge.

I detect a combination of Signals (where the Iron signal and Lead signal Exceed the Silver or Gold signals ) by a significantly % strenght at about 10 feet from that Corner / section of the stone
that you can barely see at the 4th Picture where I am standing right above the Signal Spot.

I think in older Times People did use the 10 foot distance Very often to hide something because nobody else would Know on what Direction from the stone. Of course 12, 15 and 20 feet distance were also used by other people...

At that 10 foot spot THERE are also Ag, Gold and Copper Signals But Their Manifestation IS BLUNTED. In other words something is Suppressing their Reaching the surface normally like in Many other Spots I have studied with the Pendulum.

No I am not digging this one. I would need a Permission from DNR and I don't know if I can get one for this Area.
But I would be very curious to see what a 2 box detector or Impulse Induction detector would Register.
Would it register an Anomaly??

Thank You

No I am not digging this one.
Then at the risk of asking a dumb question, what are you wanting to accomplish with this thread? The only way to know if you have found anything (and therefore whether the rock has any significance) is to verify the target. If you are unable to do that, then everything is just speculation.

I guess I wanted to see if I would receive reactions and how many from other hunters who would also Suspect it being interesting that " If it is 10 feet or 11 feet from the stone SW or W corner, and no same Subdued Ag and Au signal is detected in other directions up to 20 feet away from stone, then maybe its something...."

I didn't measure beyond 20 feet distance.
It takes concentration.
But even from such massive stone, the farther you walk away from 10 feet point , the more Unreliable it is ( in Old times; put yourself in the shoes of the owner of the hidden stuff ) to Visually Trace a totally straight line .
In order for him to be able to easily recover it much much later!
So i think he didn't go for 20 feet away.

Anyway, i do agree best way to know is to find out!
