field of iron still ringin' in my ears

Decided to explore the wooded area around the pond on my new hunting ground. Each swing of the coil lets a machine gun-like spray of iron signals fly. The iron covers the ground for at least 2 acres. Forget about digging all signals here. I get a high signal every thirty seconds though and one out of every 20 high signals is something decent.

This bullet popped out in the first 5 minutes. The soil is dark and moist and gives the bullets a smoky grey hue, not too purty.

Anyone able to identify the bullet at a glance? I found 2 of these today, I hadn't found one like these before out of 50 found across the street.

I didn't think much about this thing when I found it, until I got home and saw the image on the circular section. I think it's silver plated. The guy walking next to the horse seems to be wearing a revolutionary war type hat, and there's a deer draped over the horse. Any body know what this thing is, able to date it? Also, how would you clean it?

Here are the rest of the decent/ curious finds. The harmonica reed seems unusual to me, it's a lot thicker and shorter than normal and it seems to be complete. I'm also curious about the trigger guard looking pieces. Nothing incredible today but not bad for an hour I suppose. I will definitely hit the woods again tomorrow!!

Awesome digs Chopper!!! I hope someone can identify that big piece for you - I'm curious to know as well...

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

I'm pretty sure the triangular buckle is CW too.

Good, solid finds.

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

great finds, it looks like the main part to a powder flask.

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

I would also like to see a few different angles of the piece on the right of the "group" photo...

That brass piece could be a part of a broken trigger guard. :o

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

Yes, I believe that is a trigger guard.

I've found the tip of one before (part that would've extended on downward in your last photo)...broken in about the same place.

I can't for the life of me remember what that triangular piece is. I'm sure someone will post that information soon enough.

Your big piece is defiantly from a powder horn, and a large one at that! Very cool! And I would say yes on that being a part of a trigger guard.

Nice going.

Thanks Brian, I'm going to go back to the same area tomorrow and see if I can find the rest of it.

After looking around on ebay, I think the piece is a "knapsack triangle". Thanks for tipping me off to it being a C.W. find.

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

That's it!

Glad you could get it ID'ed.

Keep diggin--I can't wait to see what turns up next.

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

i posted a picture of a brass powder horn in garage sale finds. it is about the same size as this one.

go back and find the nipple, that is the part that usually held the manufacture mark.(easy for me to say huh?)

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

Sweet find's Chopper....I can see you diggin' here for year's to come.Landlocked "shark pit" for sure

Re: field of iron still ringin' in my ears

Those look like civil war bullets . I agree it is part of a powder horn. Congrats on some great finds.

very nice CW finds.I would say that the bullet that you found is a Sharps if it has a solid base.CONGRATS

Yeah that is a Sharps bullet, looks like a melted one also to the right of it. BB is right, that is part of a broken trigger guard. And the triangle buckle goes on a knapsack. Nice finds Chopper.
