EDIT: Added picture of the axe and hatchet. :)

I've not been at this hobby real long, but have been blessed to find half cents, half dimes, 3 centers, 1/2 reales, etc... But no largies. Been around a whole bunch of people who have, so its just been my luck.

This morning my 15 year old son and I grabbed the Etacs and went to detecting celebrate his birthday... ;D Went back out to our tavern site that has been so good to us in the past.

We actually spent the first hour on another part of the property before shifting back to the usual good producing area. When we did he got a nice axe head, I got a hatchet and this nice 1798 Draped Bust largie. :hello2: Been waiting a long time to find her! The photos do not do her justice - it looks much much better than those pictures make it out to be. This may be the best looking Largie that I have ever seen come out of the ground.

Thanks for looking! :)

Mach 1..........First.......Excellent find! Second.........It appears you have an error on the back. Looks like the fraction is 1 over 200. The first digit does not look like a 1 or 0. Check it under magnification. I cannot see a listing in the Red Book for this error. Hogge :headbang:

Well... I wish it was that kind of error... but its clearly 1/100 as I look at it here in my hand. This is one of those times that the pictures look worse that the naked eye. :(

I've been looking at variety... it may be a Sheldon 143. There is a slight "horn" on the 9.

But I also notice that the head touches the LIBERTY at the ER... also the RTY appears to be slightly offset from the LIBE. Not sure if that means anything though.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

When a Draped Bust copper pops up, you know you are on historic ground. You just never know what will come next on these early American sites (GW button, KG, Flowing Hair, Rev. war button, etc.). Dig those low readings as well. My KG II copper from last week read at "Nickel." :icon_thumleft:

Oh yeah! :icon_thumright: This is the same site that has produced 16 half or large cents, including DeArmitt PA's 1793 flowing hair, a flowing hair half dime, an several other goodies... and that's just the coins. ;D I've picked up some half cents but not a Largie from this site. Until now! ;D

Thanks to all for the kind words! :)

Nice find! I found a 1798 largie about a month ago, but it is no where near as nice as yours. Mine is about AG-1, barely identifiable. Congrats on a first!

Great coin, seems like a lot of fellow tnetters are finding large coppers this past week. Hope it continues for everyone.

Yep... I'm thrilled- a Draped bust in good condition. Most of them around here are toast. :( Thanks!

You are a lucky dude to find this Draped as your first largie. May you find many more and regal us with your finds.
Chris

Very lucky indeed! And blessed too! But I have a long way to go to find them the way you and your crew do... We need more sites like this one, which I stumbled upon by accident. ;D Care to share your secret in finding them since you obviously have it mastered? :)
