As those of you who live here in the northeast know, the weather hasn't been very cooperative for detecting this spring. Did manage to get out a couple weeks ago to my favorite old lots and picked up my first silver of the season...
Sure felt good to see that shiny ring and the shiny rims of silver coins against the dark earth, feels like it's been months (because it has!).
Went out for a quickie last week with Berkshire Mike (my brother) to an old field I've had some interest in. I found a 1780 reale last summer there, so I know there's more to be had, and sure enough Mike finds a seated dime in no time (see his post from last week). I didn't have the same luck unfortunately, but there's a lot of ground to cover there, so we'll be back soon.
Yesterday my Dad was in town, so he joined Mike and myself at a shoddy field near one of the local lakes for a few hours. I had never heard of this type of field, where farmers used old clothing to fertilize and aerate the soil, but thanks to one of this site's members we were able to get more information on why we were finding so many buttons in such a focused area. Literally every couple feet we'd be digging buttons, the bulk of which were small two- and four-hole underwear buttons (see the image below). In the past I had found several Seated coins in these fields, as well as some old Canadian halfpennies. We're certain this field has more to give up. Sure enough, not long after we got there, my father found a nice '20 SLQ, and within minutes I got that unmistakable coin tone and was rewarded with a beautiful 1875s dime. Not three feet away I found a really nice condition 1884 IH. Between the three of us we ended up with two seated dimes, a merc, two IH's, a Barber dime, a Standing Liberty, about a million little buttons, as well as an array of interesting individual buttons, including what could be several military buttons (any help with identification highly appreciated)...
Anyhow, I'm really glad to have had the time to get out with the both of them, and also that I finally had something to post here after being out of the loop for so long. Hope to be contributing here on a more regular basis now that the season has begun....
Thanks for looking, happy hunting,
Steve
