Well it's been a long time coming this year. Rick and I managed to get out for our first field hunt of the year and we didn't do too bad. Started on a field we affectionately call "Silver Mountain"
where I got up some nice buttons and one, I think is my oldest to date. I need help putting a date on this one with the square shank. It has 4 drilled holes around the shank and is made of pewter. If anyone knows about this style of button I would love to get some info on it.

I also got up a nice shoe buckle frame, what I think are some pewter spoon handle pieces and a few other goodies.
Then we did an old school house that a nice young couple had renovated into a house. I found a 1918 Canadian large Cent and gave it to them which absolutely thrilled them.

Next field I didn't do so well with, just a single musketball to Ricks 3 crotal bells and silver 6 pence.

HH everyone,

Looks like you're onto a nice little 18th century site there Dave. That's a really nice decorated tombac and frame buckle you recovered. That button in your first pic might have a turret shank, but I can't tell for sure from the pics. That would also date to the late 1700s. Can't believe you guys are just getting out when I'm already done.

Nice button, and buckle Dave.
Like you said with still a few keepers showing up it might be worth another trip, maybe with different machines ?
Did you figure out the other "button" or were we imagining things ?

Yea, I think that's what it is called. Square shank drilled on all 4 sides.
Thanks Bill, This winter has been a tough one.

Yea Rick and I have a lot of fun with it. He is a beast on the fields, swinging his tector like a madman and it shows, last year over over 150 colonial coppers. I've learned alot from him and I hope we can continue our succes this year but we have been off to a slow start. Too long of a winter and too many things to do a home.
Good luck Dave,

I think that's 17th Century-kind of old. My buddy dug a Rev. War. button, a French Regiment button with the same shape and style. His was made of brass.

Yeah, it's still cold out there and lots of trees barely have leaves starting on them around here - the lilac bush in my yard had flowers on it before the leaves were half an inch long. It's May 28th and I haven't been bothered by a mosquito or black fly yet!
It's always nice to have some signs of age showing up, a button of that age or a few musketballs always gives me the motivation to keep at a site!

Your right STC, I found a 1677 silver French 4 sole coin in the next field over from this one.
