Holy Wah! Got it Tuesday and took me until tonight to get out swinging. Got home from work and went to the grade school the next street over from our house. It was built in the 1950's. Walked a strip 200 ft. long, beside a sidewalk. Took about an hour. Yes I definitley have some rust to get knocked off but all in all I think the finds were respectible. Although all clad coins they are as follows. 5 Quarters, 6 dimes, 3 nickles, 6 pennies, a costume jewlry cross, pencils, foil and pull tabs. Say if you think about it the pull tabs don't have to go to waste. I save them for the St. Judes Childrens Hospital. 1200 tabs pays for a treatment for a child. How awesome is that. Well looking forward to the weekend!

Glad you are warming up the new machine. Good luck in your future hunts!!

Hope your new detector brings you fantastic finds.

Hello NorthWoods!
Good job getting out and a hunting! Where's the pics?

Are you serious? 1200 pulltabs means that much to your local hospital and kids? Maybe we should all think about starting
some kind of drive. I've saved every pulltab I've dug over the last 16 months or so. Don't tell my wife; she thinks I'd tossed a bucket or two away months ago! Lol!

I totally forgot about the pulltabs being used for that...Here in Pa, I remembered after reading this my one niece was always asking what you doing with your pulltab when I would get a drink.. I asked her why an she would always say my school is collcting them ..doh! an here we all thought the pull tabs we're worthless junk...

I don't mean to be a downer, because I along with most people on this forum are more than willing to help the less fortunate. I just want to point out that there is probably a better way.

If somebody had an actual link to St. Jude's with information on that topic that would be great. 1200 pulltabs is worth about $4, now if you had 1200 pop cans that may be a different story.

I guess the point of the post would be save all of the scrap metal you dig, recycle it and use that money for a good cause. It doesn't hurt to have all of the information either.

My wife's grandmother, who lived with us now due to her age, does this same thing. She pulls the pop-tops off any can she finds and takes them to the hospital where she volunteers at for some similar type of program. I didn't have the heart to tell her otherwise. Problem is, she never remembers to put them all in one place, so I'm constantly finding them:

in the lint-trap of the dryer....
strewn out across the kitchen counters....
on top of the t.v.....
in the dog's mouth....

Thanks for your encouragement guys. I went out for half an hour last night. and pulled a buck 6. Got alot more junk as I was a bit farther from the sidewalk. Did have my first pocket spill. A couple of quarters laying stacked. Although I do my fair share of physical labor at work, doing a squat to kneeling position every so many feet gives you some pretty good exercise. Yet more rust to work off!
Yes, the pull tab gig is a good one. I am no expert at how it works. My daughter works at St Francis Hospital here in Peoria and they are affiliated with the Childrens Hospital in some way. I give them to her and she takes them to work. Every trip I make back up home to the U.P. I have friends that usually have a couple of thousand saved for us. I also have a coffee can at work set up for tabs. But it is just a thought. Kind of a reality check into how forunate we are. Thanks so much guys! U.P. out
