managed a little detecting between deer hunting today. went to an old church site and cemetary circa 1860. found the coffin handle right away then worked into the woods where the old road was and found the ring up next to a tree about three inches deep so im not sure if its as old as the site.no carat marking, it just says SOLID GOLD inside the band. warm weather heading this way so I will go back. gotta be some old coins there. the church has been gone since the 1920s and its way back in the woods so chances are good its virgin territory.

Great find flip, just to set the record straight, "solid gold" actually can be anywhere between 14 and 24k. You will have to get it tested to see for sure and the more orange it is the purer it will be.

Very nice ring...looks big. I like the coffin handle too...don't dig too deep!

Nice!! I like to see all of us Missouri boys do well! Tsgman

O.K. am I the only one that finds that just a little creepy finding a gold ring and a coffin handle on the same hunt? I sooo hope they were a long ways apart :-\ ;)

for the record the coffin handle was found 5 inches deep near a trash dump behind the church foundation, NOT in the cemetary.

Great find on the ring, Flip! It was at one time, very personal and valuable to somebody. :)

Now....the coffin handle raises alot of questions. I know that other Tnetters have found handles. How in the world does a handle come off a coffin so that you could find it? Strange! ::)

LOL thanks for clearing that up, after reading your post my little pea brain just started wandering (yes sometimes it is to little to be left alone)

Was the Cemetery Relocated ?

I found many helping Restore an old Cemetery where Several
coffins were Removed & relocated in the past.

They may also have dug too close to an older Grave when,
digging a new grave at some point.

Congrats on the Ring Flip.

thanks jeff, i didnt want anyone to think I was digging a little too deep lol. heres a pic of the site. the foundation is to the right over in the woods. going back tomorrow with the weedeater.

It would be Awsome to Clean that out , Detect & Restore it.

A suggestion. Find out where the Congrigations New Church is, If you Don't know.
Contact the Preacher. Tell him you would like to make a Project
out of Cleaning it up, & Restoring it.
With or Without Help.
Permission should be Granted. (if he says no, write a letter to the Editor of your local Paper Stating your Desire & the fact the Church Dosn't want it cleaned up/ saved :( ) You may get Company in the form of Volunteers. But my guess not one will tell you no detecting unless they think your detector reaches several feet in the ground.
Promise the Church all Items Dug which are Connected with the Cemetery. Handles, Jewelry, Etc. You keep the Coins.
Of course Supply the church with a well Rounded Selection of Coin Types Found on Site.

Everyone Wins ;)

Personally, I feel I am overdue for another Project like that & would
Love to find another one.
