Finds from 9/23/09

Got out to my site again and made some decent finds in 5 hours. The items on the top row have edge work on the right hand side. The exception is the tear drop that is worked on all edges and the best work is on the left side. The bottom left item looks like a modern day gutting hook. The point measures 2 1/4" long, 1 3/16" wide and 3/16" thick at the thickest part. I am new to this, is the point a corner or side notch. The two on the bottom right look like shaft scrapers. The recent rains helped clean up the flint but the leaves are starting to fall. I hope to get out again tommorrow.

Nice corner notch, looks like a Charleston Pine Tree, material looks like Kanawha chert / flint, Imo. Good early point.

I'm glad you pictured that shaftscraper / spokeshave, the second piece down on the right. I've always thought that's what these are, here are a couple very similar forms from Va. It's good to see some examples from other areas.

Kirk was my first guess but after seeing that thin flaking towards the meridian I think it's a CPT. There are many point types with a similar form, it's tough to be 100% on id.

Chuck here is a picture of it in hand. I like Uniface's Thebes that would place the point older. 37 thanks for providing the link to the point ID website. I've only been ivolved in this hobby for a week and I can't believe what I have found. I like looking at pic's of everyone's finds and I believe it will help me find more artifacts in the future. Thanks to everyone for your help. Now I can respect the hard work it takes to build a collection.

The broken point was found today. It has the same width and barbs except it is stemmed.

very nice finds!i think it may be a thebes also,it almost looks like the right notch is keyed or e-notched,but its hard to tell.very nice archaic piece regardless.good luck with building that collection,you have gotten off to a good start, and thx for sharing the pix
