My family bought some land in Christian County, KY a few years ago, I love history and everything that comes with it, but the thought of looking for arrowheads and the like never crossed my mind until one was accidentally uncovered in a creek a few weeks ago.

This the creek/rock wall that everything was found. Most of the items were found along the wall where the creek cut away from the base of the exposed bedrock.

(Pictured Above) The way the camera is facing is where the creek cuts to left and you can walk along the rock wall and that's where all but a few items were found. (Area not pictured)

(Pictured Above) The first arrowhead was found in the sand bar, but unfortunately I never got a picture of it (that was two weeks ago)

The below picture is where most of the items were found, although it doesn't show the ground/soil or the rock, but you can you see the creek in the background and how it cuts away.

(Picture Below Large Arrow that was found in the same hole in the rock wall as the small arrowhead, the hole was made from erosion of soil)

Along this rock wall we found an interesting piece of rock that has a circle indentation in it that to me does not appear to be natural. I don't know how much you can see in the picture.

The following debitage was found around this interesting piece of rock:
Pink colored flint/chert

More debitage:
This is gray colored flint/chert. It doesn't seem to be as higher quality as the pink pieces.

The final piece that I have is a white flint/chert material that appears to be high quality.

This picture is everything that we found that day.
whole collection with raw flint at the bottom left.webp
The larger piece on the bottom left was found in a different spring fed creek on the same property south of where the rest of items were found

I could use the experts here to help identify what type of flint/chert is seen here because without a book, I'm lost as to where to start.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

This community has tons of information.

I'm no expert on your KY area, but damn, you have a great looking spot and you really have my interest...good luck!!, others will chime in soon.
Thanks,
BCI

Creeks shift and move and that overhang is a natural buffer that will get cut out. The spot looks great. I would also look downstream for what may have been flushed out. I would also dig around the high knoll off that creek. Just with the debitage you are likely to find some really nice KY finds.
I am stoked for you and most of all welcome aboard .

That's the plan. We found all of these practically on the surface, but this weekend we plan on doing some digging around that knoll.

The leaves are my biggest enemy right now and possibly a rattler or two but that's very unlikely. The leaves are hiding everything on me.

Does anyone have any recommendation as to how to go about doing a dig, such has like how to start the dig, I don't want to break anything and I know digging for artifacts of any kind is tedious and patience is a must.

I use a rake to move the leaves. There are allot in this forum that have done digs and use the sift. I am sure somebody will help you with it.

Wow, I didn't know Christian County had rock shelters! All I've ever seen down there is miles and miles of corn and beans...lol. Digging in the woods for arrowheads is by far the most aggravating thing I've ever done....too many roots. I'm a shelter digger and as such, I would go straight for the back wall(s) of the shelters. Don't let the creek influenece your judgement and decision making. But do ask yourself.... where was that creek a thousand years ago....eight thousand years ago. Look at the overhang and try to "visualize" how much might have been lost to erosion over the thousands of years. That's one big ess shelter!! And you are in the heart of Clovis country there.....best of luck.

the square piece could be an English gun flint. You have quit a site there. I used to visit Col. Veeson who dug Glovers cave. What a great collection of Kentucky artifacts. Good Luck with the site.

Man you ain't lying about the cornfields and beans.... thanks for the input man, I hope to uncover something cool, it can native american, old english flint, or a civil war relic, I don't care.....

I VOLUNTEER! I volunteer to help with the excavating!

Just sayin, Katniss style :)

We are heading down this weekend to do some digging(hopefully theres a part 2 to this tgread)....I cut the handle down on a hoe and I have one of those garden shovels, what other tools make it easier to scrape the surface?

I like a masonry trowel.

nice finds congrats HH
