First Barber...First 1800's Coin...Goal for 2009

On Sunday I found my first Barber, a coin I put on my wish list for 2009 and a coin I've wanted to find since I started MDing. It was found in a spot that no one would look at and get excited about. Just one of many flat areas within 1/4 mile of a river.

I'd dug six or seven pieces of junk when I got a great high tone on my Ace 250. I didn't think too much about it until I pinpointed it and it seemed small enough to be a coin. I flipped out the dirt clod and saw a small silver disc, and when I picked it up and saw a wreath around "One Dime" I knew I had my first Barber.

I thinks the detail is pretty fine. I'd love to have your opinion on the condition of this coin.

Re: First Barber...First 1800's Coin...Goal for 2009

nice find .....coin facts.......
"The 1898-O and 1898-S are very similar in scarcity, but for different reasons. The O-mint was not saved because the coins were produced and distributed in a poor part of the country (at the turn of the century). The humid climate was also not conducive to preservation."

"However, 1898-O is one of the poorest struck issues of the entire series. We have seen several examples of mint state coins which are so poorly struck above Liberty's forehead that only a few letters of the word LIBERTY could be seen. It is not uncommon for the hair above the forehead to completely lack detail. On the reverse, wreath detail will be similarly soft."1

The finest Uncirculated examples graded by PCGS are 5 MS-66's.

congrats,randall

Very cool. The 1800's barber dimes are a lot harder to find than the more common 1900's (I think the half dozen I have found have all been 1900's). Yours is in very good condition.

Enjoy.
