I've been thinking about getting a real MD for years. I own a 1960's vintage British Mine Detector kit model 4C which I sucessfully used to find a set of lost keys for my daughter's friend at the local beach many years ago. That outing pretty much covered off my investment. I never really found anything else of value with it.
Today, I drove about an hour from home to visit the only dealer I could find anywhere close to me. He didn;t have much in stock and I had the opportunity to research what he did have and make my decision. ( I could have ordered from away, but decided not to )
He had Garrett ACE 250's, a Tesoro Vaquero, Fisher Gold Bug II et al. I opted for the Vaquero based on some of the on-line reviews I read.(and the price suited me)
As soon as I could this evening, I high-tailed it over to the local beach (mentioned above). I was not all that interested in searching the beach proper as it is very early in the season. What really interested me is that before the beach was discovered as a leisure destination, it was a fishing community which was abandonded back in the '40's. All that is left is rock foundation walls, few of which are identifiable as such unless you know that they are there.
The first thing I noticed was that after exploring well up from the water for a while then moving closer to the beach, the Vaquero really went haywire in the wet sand (saltwater). I don't yet know if I will be able to get it work there.
It only took me a few minutes to get the hang of the "discriminator" function and that was when I found two Quarters, a dime, and one penny. The oldest was 1970, the newest, 1986. Not from the era of the old village but they were between 4 and 6" in the soil. I really had to dig for them. It was a great learning experience.
I'm going to have a lot of fun this summer! YAY!

From the land of the Bluenose.....welcome to the site and hobby. Looking forward to reading about your adventures.

Swing low.
Swing slow.
And dig deep.

I am a Newbi as well just started in January of this year. Use an Ace 250 it is great for dry sand but when I hit the wet black sand and salt water it really is not effective. I have heard from several people that it is not the right machine for surf and wet black sand. However in its defense it is a great machine in parks, tot lots, play fields, and dry sand beaches. Just have fun and get to know your machine and it will reward you. HHHH

Thanks to everyone for the Friendy greetings and the encouragement!

Leslie, I live in Sambro but my work takes me all over HRM and beyond. I will be keeping my MD with me at all times!

Harry, I am not getting my hopes up re: wet sand at the seashore. I will try some tests with some known targets.

Day two found me at the site of a long ago abandonded gold mine. Huge tailings piles but precious little quartz to be found. I did get some hits from some metalic lumps which are heavy like gold but kind of crusted in oxides and muck. I need to spend some time identifying what I got. At least I located the site and can go back when I can spend more time. Kinda makes mw wish I had gone for a MD more designed to detect Au. Oh well...live and learn! (view attached picture with bs filter in place!) ;D
