Took the "Big Plunge" this week and bought myself the Explorer SE that I've wanted for some time. Not having any chance to swing it this past work-week, I was looking forward to takin' it for a spin today. I spent the past few nights reading everything I could on this machine, but it was the extremely patient help of NC-Joe that got me up and running the way I did today. This is truly an awesome machine - if you don't want to read, practice, dig and then read, practice, dig some more - don't get one. I will most definitely take awhile to really start to get fully comfortable swinging this monster.
Anyway, Joe set me up with a decent program to use just for me to start out with today to get used to the sounds and such. My very first find was a matchbox car from around 5 inches - the lower part and all the wheels were gone therefore crushing my hopes of taking it out for a spin tonight :tongue3:. My second find (possibly one of my best) I owe to Joe - I was slowly going over one spot that kept throwing mixed signals at me. Joe cut the plug and out pops a solid brass hinge - ran the probe through the hole and came up with two nails - ran the probe through one more time and Joe says to me, "there's your quarter". It most certainly was - then I picked it up to see it was an 1891 Seated Liberty (no "O") in real pretty shape. This coin was only about three inches deep but was mixed in (masked) with three other pieces practically on top of it!
I swung the SE a little more after that but was also chomping at the bit to swing the "Mighty Burrito" II Umax - I just got my 8X9 coil for that and man did it make a difference. Dug my first thimble today and some strange pewter "whatsit". My best find of the day though (relic-wise) is this decorative chain (?) piece made of brass. It still has some of the silver gilt on it but for the life of me cannot figure out what this piece is! It's too fragile to be used for horse-tack - if anyone has ideas, fill us in.
This is long enough already so I'll end it now - thanks for stopping by and keep on swingin'...

Keep your eyes out for posts from Doug and Joe - they both made some killer finds today as well, but Joe's certainly tips the bottles... ;D

Enjoy the pics!

Wow Buddy!! Those are some incredible finds for sure!! Gorgeous coin and yet I like the chain type piece myself! Congrats on the new machine and all the goodies you got!

Congrats on your Seated Quarter find with your new SE, DD-777!!

Learn that machine well, and it's going to reward you tenfold!!

Congratulations on the 1891 Seated DD-777
The SE is not an easy machine to learn (as I too found out)
but each time you take it for a spin, it becomes easier and things start to make sence.
Like Capt SE said, it will reward you 10 fold to help ease the frustrations.

Sweet sweet SWEET! Love the Seated coins... hope to get my first soon!

Congrats!

That's just incredible!! I too plan to get an explorer se some time in the future, that would be my first new machine since 1978.

She be a pretty sight! Congrats on the new SE and the nice finds you made.

Hey DD-777 that's great. Do you mind sharing what the signal sounded and looked like on the XS and what characteristics it had that made you dig it over say a false iron signal??

Nice finds Double D. Good luck with the SE....I think you'll like it

Congrats on the new Explorer. It took me a while to learn how to use mine (heck, I'm still learning), but it is a great machine and can really ID silver well. I haven't had an experience like yours yet where I dug iron pieces from the hole where a silver coin was hiding, but I will sure pay closer attention to any mixed signals I get from now on. Man that seated is a beauty!!!

That's a beautiful seated quarter. Very nice finds. I was very frustrated :icon_scratch: after spending 1k on a machine I hated at first. I love the SE now ;D HH!

Thats a nice way to break in a new machine, dig a seated quarter!!! Good job

Folks, this is the 2nd time I've detected with Andy that he has pulled an awesome coin out in front of me within 30 minutes of arriving!
The first time it was a Colonial copper, and this time a beautiful seated quarter. Both times he had brand new machines that he had no clue how to operate. :tongue3: He is one lucky SOB! ;D This quarter looks WAY better in person. It is a beauty. :icon_king:
Congrats on you finds, and your new Minelab. If you're going to learn how to use it, we both know Joe is the man to teach you.
It was great to hunt with you guys again yesterday and as always, thanks for a day of laughs. :icon_jokercolor: ;D

Very nice digs and great coin. Be patient with the SE. When Dman bought one about 6 months ago, I was skeptical but he has dug some very nice deep relics with it. WTG and HH.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments! I'm a bit under the weather today so I'll be diving into the manual some more on the SE. I'm looking forward to learning more and finding more...
