Took the "Big Plunge" this week and bought myself the Explorer SE that I've wanted for some time. Not having any chance to swing it this past work-week, I was looking forward to takin' it for a spin today. I spent the past few nights reading everything I could on this machine, but it was the extremely patient help of NC-Joe that got me up and running the way I did today. This is truly an awesome machine - if you don't want to read, practice, dig and then read, practice, dig some more - don't get one. I will most definitely take awhile to really start to get fully comfortable swinging this monster.
Anyway, Joe set me up with a decent program to use just for me to start out with today to get used to the sounds and such. My very first find was a matchbox car from around 5 inches - the lower part and all the wheels were gone therefore crushing my hopes of taking it out for a spin tonight :tongue3:. My second find (possibly one of my best) I owe to Joe - I was slowly going over one spot that kept throwing mixed signals at me. Joe cut the plug and out pops a solid brass hinge - ran the probe through the hole and came up with two nails - ran the probe through one more time and Joe says to me, "there's your quarter". It most certainly was - then I picked it up to see it was an 1891 Seated Liberty (no "O") in real pretty shape. This coin was only about three inches deep but was mixed in (masked) with three other pieces practically on top of it!
I swung the SE a little more after that but was also chomping at the bit to swing the "Mighty Burrito" II Umax - I just got my 8X9 coil for that and man did it make a difference. Dug my first thimble today and some strange pewter "whatsit". My best find of the day though (relic-wise) is this decorative chain (?) piece made of brass. It still has some of the silver gilt on it but for the life of me cannot figure out what this piece is! It's too fragile to be used for horse-tack - if anyone has ideas, fill us in.
This is long enough already so I'll end it now - thanks for stopping by and keep on swingin'...

Keep your eyes out for posts from Doug and Joe - they both made some killer finds today as well, but Joe's certainly tips the bottles... ;D

Enjoy the pics!

Folks, this is the 2nd time I've detected with Andy that he has pulled an awesome coin out in front of me within 30 minutes of arriving!
The first time it was a Colonial copper, and this time a beautiful seated quarter. Both times he had brand new machines that he had no clue how to operate. :tongue3: He is one lucky SOB! ;D

but he dont have a CSN.

Very fine. That lloks 2 B in great shape.

Wow ! Very nice seated. I would love to know what that chain piece is. I found a piece last year that look alot like the end of your chain. Nobody has been able to really ID it either. Here is mine. Can you post a closer pic of yours?

Thanks Brian - I knew I'd seen that looped piece before! It's up in the "what is it" forum so hopefully we'll get an i.d. on it soon... :)

Nice quarter. The SE really like the silver.

Nice SILVER DD.
Get well soon so we can see more.

I don't mind helping you learn the new machine, but don't you know you are not suppose to show me up. I want my program back..... :'(

Slow and steady, listen to every target in the ground and find the good ones!

I think those words will be embedded in your brain for months to come "there's your silver quarter".... A seated quarter is a very rare and great find. But getting one in that condition, amongst a brass hing and 4 nails makes it that much sweeter.

Congrats on the awesome find, I can't say how much I enjoy picking... I mean detecting with you and Doug, you guys are top notch!

Hope you get to feeling better.

Don't worry about that program - Izzy was playing with it this morning and erased it... :o :D

I do appreciate your patience in helping me out with the SE - I don't think I would have picked off that quarter without your help. Now if we could just do something about the amount of cologne someone was wearing... :P :-X ;D

NICE FIRST DAY LIKE THE SEADED COIN.

Lovin' that old silver, DD!!! 8) I've yet to find a seated. :P Got a capped, but no seated..go figure? :icon_scratch:

Fantastic hunting, DD!! :icon_pirat: Go get 'em!!

Nana

Nice....... No silver for me yet. But soon the season is almost here...

Sweet quarter. They just don't jump out of the ground & bite you in the butt. I have found
one in 9 years. Congratulations.

My SE is still driving me crazy!! You're lucky to have NC-Joe there with ya!

Andy,
It was really bugging me because I knew I had seen a decorative brass piece before like you found , and it finally came to me.
Do we have a match? Could it be? :tongue3:
