Just listed my first item, wish i could have gotten it up a few days earlier but it's on there now =) Wish i could link to it but don't think i can since i'm not a charter member (sadly i can't figure out how to become one or what it takes). Listed some Tiffany and Co earrings that i posted about earlier in some posts. /fingers crossed for good luck. I think i priced them well to get some bites.

Good luck with your listing. A good strategy for when first starting out selling is to sell some cheap items to build up feedback. A lot of buyers will avoid auctions with low feedback sellers.

Ah, their loss then I listed it at half the price of the other one on there =)

Way to go on your 1st Ebay listing.

Check this out to become a Charter Member... well worth it to support Tnet.

I wasn't trying to knock you, just trying to offer a bit of advice. I can see how my reply might be mis-read. I really did mean the "good luck" part. :icon_thumright:

Oh i thought 250 was a decent price, only other ones i saw were some guy selling for 500 for while. Oh well, only time will tell.

Your comment GibH wasn't taken as a dis =)

Are these the same ones you listed? A super high starting bid will scare off a lot of potential buyers.
Vintage 1994 Tiffany Co Stelring and 18K 750 Heart Earrings | eBay

Not sure what your point is, and let's think about this for a sec. Say you were looking to buy a watch for detecting and I listed a vintage Rolex for $9,000, I agree the price would definitely scare you off! However, if you were looking for a vintage Rolex for your Rolex collection, and had the money to spend, would 9k scare you... most likely not. Listing high for any item obviously scares lots of people off because the whole idea is to find just one person who will pay that price, and it's irrelevant how many you scare off in the process. Everyone has different ideas of what items are worth so it doesn't make sense not to start high and see if anyone goes for it. Sure you could sell them for $100 cheaper, and get a quick sale, but this is about making money, and there's not too many people who won't wait a week or two to make an extra $50 on a couple hundred dollar item. I list stuff all the time that most people think is way too high, but I do it because I know my buyers, and I have a sense of what the person with the most interest might pay. That's also taken into account when I buy... it's not what Joe Blow would pay, it's what I think the best buyer would shell out for it... and because of this thinking, and knowing the stuff I buy, it helps me win a lot of auctions because many people think in terms of what a general consensus price would be, and not what's the very most they feel they could get.

So is this officially the "ebay forum" now? Just wondering...

Yeah, not to take anything away from twiasp but I think the time has come for the owners of this site to create an ebay subsection on the garage sale finds forum. I know it's winter time and many people can't get out to garage sales but this is the garage sale forum not the ebay forum. I know most of us are all guilty of posting our ebay rant and raves on here, myself included. I'm going to post a topic/poll on this subject. Please view it and vote accordingly.

PS- Congrats on your first listing twiasp. I wish you nothing but success on ebay.

Diggum,

I could not have said it better myself. Thank you for taking this initiative. I support this 100%.

I agree that this forum has a valid place for ebay discussion but it has gotten out of hand and the topic of discussion has become "lets share ebay stories", "help me with my listings", "help me with this bad seller/buyer", "look at what im selling".

I cant speak for all but I call the garage sales section "home" and I love to get on here to share my picks and swap knowledge. I dont come on here to discuss ebay. Please, lets make this distinction.

And exactly how is that going to change much or make it better? It's not like 500 posts go on here every day and 250 ebay ones are pushing the garage sale ones down the page. Yes, it's Winter, but I think it's you guys it's getting to. :)

I have probably asked too many questions about ebay and such lately, BUT garage sales, thrift stores, etc... are just the first half of what happens to the items we find. I have been inquiring about Ebay lately because finding stuff is cool, but having it rot on my desk or sell it for melt at a lower price is crazy. Sorry if I offended some by being excited about increasing my knowledge and listing my 1st ebay sale, whether it turns out good or horid. I think its safe to say LOTS of threads on this forum gets comments that could be construed as derailing/sidetracking the OP's threads. So what's the big deal about a few Ebay questions? I try and start my own threads about it so as to not derail another. Don't you think its nice to help people with this hobby?

I started on Tnet for metal detecting and CRH. CRH forums have gotten a little odd lately and catty so I looked around and found this forum and another favorite is the Beach and Shallow Water one for metal detecting (fun to see since I have no beaches to MD). I would like to think I'm a smarter person now with all the information learned from this forum and through online researching.

You are taking this 100% the wrong way. It has nothing to do with going off topic.

We want to help one another. We have been helpful thus far, have we not?

What the issue is has to do with the fact that this forum has become the ebay forum. Some of us, many of whom have been here for many years, do not want to discuss ebay over and over and over. We enjoy seeing finds posted and discussed. "How much can I get for this on ebay"... it gets old, quick.

The point is, some of us collect stuff and some of us sell it. Most do both. It has become clear that some folks are just using the garage sales section to learn how to "quick flip" stuff for profit. I cant speak for everyone but I find it to be insulting to our community.

Sorry if you took my messages the wrong way but sometimes the truth hurts. I wish you and everyone the best of luck selling on ebay. I will continue to help others the best I can but if I feel someone is taking advantage, then maybe a change needs to take place.

By the way, I looked at your auction and it looks great. Congrats on your first listing. For your first, you did an excellent job, IMO.

I would mention whether or not the earrings have backing plates. Remove the blurb about paying within 48 hours, as it is pointless. Ebay already has standard policy for stuff like that. Maybe consider describing how the item will be packed and shipped.

Good luck.

I don't only flip items either, just some items. I really don't want to hassle with mailing tons of items for .99 over and over again. Just last week I found a set of 14 piece Cuisinart knives in a block for personal use, spoon rest for when I cook, thing to hold kitchen utensils in, and just yesterday I bought 3 pocket knives and 2 large maybe skinning knives. The knives are for pocket ones, a large Normark, large Case Sod Buster, medium/large sized Forest-Master and the 2 skinning looking ones in leather sheaths are ones that say "J.Russell & Co. Green River Works" and "Herter's Inc". I have some friends that hunt a lot and figure they will give them a good home. Also some of the jewelry I find is given to others, ex.. most crosses I find are given to a pastor friend that uses it as a reward in his church as a reward to the youth. (I'm not religous but respect their choice to do what they want to)

I put butterfly backings in the description just didn't state it in the text, probably should have though. Thought the packing was self explanatory in shipping area and picture of it in a jewelry box inside another box. You're probably right though I should be more clear in the future. Thanks for the tip =)
