First field hunt of the new season

After a long and boring summer I finally had an opportunity to hook up with my good buddy Dan yesterday afternoon for a short hunt. I had made a scouting trip a few days earlier and noticed a couple of our old sites where the crops had finally been harvested. Both of these places have been pounded, but we were just chomping at the bit to get out somewhere. And boy did it feel good to be out in the fields swinging again in spite of a damp and dreary weather. The first site was a harvested peanut field which is our favorite due to the stubble-free bare dirt which allows for smooth swinging and easy eyeballing. For those of you up north that may not be familiar with peanuts I'm including a pic below showing how they look after being dug up and left to dry. Another pic shows the field after the harvest has been taken in. Pretty awesome sites to hunt. Anyway, our finds for the day weren't plentiful as expected, but both of us managed to pull out a few items. Dan made the best find of the day with a nice coin, and my favorite recovery was an intricate 18th century open-work button. I also dug a few buttons and a couple other odds and ends, but overall the results weren't too impressive. But our seasons usually start out on the slow side as we wait on fields to open up, and many of our new ones are still planted in cotton and beans so it'll still be a while. At least things are looking up, and we can't wait to see what surprises are waiting to be unearthed this season.

Bill,

I know you have been chomping at the bit, so it's good to see you get out. No silver this time but you did get a nice button. I will be watching for your posts!

I alway look forward to your posts and its great to see you back out for a new season of digging. Keep those great finds coming.

Nice button, I've never got one of that type.
Looks like a good crop of peanuts.
Great conditions on that Big field.

I noticed a couple of soy bean field have been cut up here, considering your longer growing season, and "probably" earlier planting I would assume that they will be cutting some of those soon down your way too ?

Nice button Bill, not a bad first hunt at all. Silver will come!

Rick - beans are the last to come out of the ground down here, and usually its not until Nov or sometimes as late as the end of the year. Many of our sites have beans this year so, unfortunately, we still have quite a ways to go. But we should have a few cotton and peanut fields to hit before then.

Nice start!, looks awesome to have such flat stubble free dirt to hit!!

Wow, thats a nice looking field! I wish ours were like this too! Love the button!

Hey that was better day than my last day out…sure you'll have a lot more coming during the rest of the season

Nice finds. They are starting to pull crops in by us also & I hope to hit the fields soon.

Those pictures make it look like a peanut field is more desirable than an undisked corn field. Very nice buttons.

Bill. Love the ornate button that is sweet. At least you got a stubble free field lol. My 1st hunt was tough but like you said its a warm welcome. Like going home. Good luck to you and the crew.

Congrats on getting back out Bill, it sure looks like you had fun. With your summer of diligent research, I'll bet you have some great hunts ahead.

Great to see you getting out my friend. I love those open work buttons. I always look forward to your posts and that open peanut field looks like heaven to hunt. Much better than this super thick forest up here

Nice saves, Bill. Just the beginning of things yet to come!

Billy boy all my southern buddies are warming up for the season:thumbsup:

I have also been scouting lately today the foliage started really falling..

Nice variety boys..

Uh oh....someone's out of hibernation!

Nice start to the season Bill. I look forward to getting in a few hunts with you this year. I see a hammered gold coin in your future.

Nice assortment of finds, sometimes it takes a few or many visits to a field to find a sweet spot of finds. Best of luck on the return hunt Bill.
