I HOPE THE YEAR STAYS ON TRACK. THIS WAS MY FIRST FIND OF 2006. WE DARED THE COLD AND RAIN, BUT WAS WELL WORTH IT. ITS A 1774 SPANISH SILVER 2 OR 4 REALE NOT SURE. AND DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD SUGGESTION ON HOW TO CLEAN THE BLACK OFF SILVER WITHOUT DAMAGING COIN. WELL HAPPY HUNTING TO ALL.

WoW! What a find! Congrats!

:o

Mighty nice find!

Clean it with the aluminum foil and baking soda method.

Use a coffee cup and fill it with boiling water.

Mix in a tablespoon of common baking soda.

Wrap coin in name brand cooking aluminum foil (loosely wrap it). You want water to be able to get inside to the coin.

Place coin in foil into cup.

You should see bubbles rising.

After about 5 minutes remove coin and wash it with liquid soap rubbing the coin between your fingers.

Repeat is necessary.

Nice find :o If you must clean it use the method sherman said, but even that is counted as cleaning by coin dealers, plus you dont want it to look shiney and ugly.

Whats nice about Spanich Silver is that you can find it all over the early Colonial sites ....You just need to find those early Cellar holes and areas that had plenty of activity back in the early 1800's ....Nice find ..Seeker

Thats a cool find!

awesome find for the new year. keep it up and hh

Great stuff! It feels great to see the stuff come out of the ground. ;D

THANKS FOR ALL GREAT REPLIES. MAYBE ILL LEAVE IT ALONE. IT CAME OUT OF FIELD IN SJ. THANKS ALL HH

That's a great way to start out the new year. Hole or no hole, I'm really impressed!

Way cool. As a personal keeper, I might want to clean it only a little using the baking soda/Al foil method described, but ageing/patina is a good thing.
