Hey Everybody, first day here. Always wanted to treasure hunt. Went out with my metal detector to a local field and found a quarter ~6” deep. Nothing crazy but I’m hyped about it! Happy to be here.

I would highly recommend a Nokta Makro Legend with your listed budget. Don't cheap out on a pinpointer either, as that can make or break your hunting experience.

While I don't know a 340 from a 440 or 540, there is a sub-forum w/ several posts re: the later that might have some relevant tips at https://www.treasurenet.com/forums/vanquish.1019/ Also, consider looking at some youTube videos on the 340 to make sure you're getting all the performance out of it you can.

Here is a youTube video comparing the 340, 440, and 540.
The 340 appears to have some decent features. I recommend making a test bed where you live by burying some coins, brass, pop can, pull tab, etc. far enough apart from each other, then run the 340 over them and note how it reacts. Adjust some settings and try again. Repeat until you get a handle on it. Then maybe go to a local playground/ball field where there is bound to be some buried coins and junk then see how you do. Practice, patience, frustration, and hopefully some neat finds are all part of the hobby.

Not necessarily. I've been detecting for several months, and I've still yet to find any silver, gold, or jewelry. Eventually, yes, but there's no guarantee it'll be soon.
Just remember that when you drive by that nice looking urban area, as schools, halls, church's, and parks.
So has been many others that have owned a detector for the last 60 yrs.
Patience is the key, location, keep digging.
It's a numbers game.
Sometimes the quality of detector has some bearing on what is recovered.

Welcome to Treasurenet and congrats on your first find.
