Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
We recently moved from San Diego to Manassas, Va and I picked up a metal detector (Whites 6000) at the suggestion of one of my friends who lives here.

My wife and I have gone out a couple of times but it’s difficult to find places to go with permission. In this case we went where our new house is being built and came up with these two items near each other on a hill. Another guy out there had found a flat button and a couple of confederate bullets nearby.

Anyone know anything about these? Civil war? Colonial? One is clearly a button and the other appears to be a decorative clasp or some sort. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

A suspender clasp! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! I’ve stared at that thing for days and just couldn’t put my finger on the design but that makes total sense. If only I could date it somehow...
Its probably late 19th C & the button is early 19th C, so your in the right spot.

I agree - broken suspender clip and broken flat button. I would imagine that what private property remains in Manassas has been pounded since the 1960s and the property owners have been badgered for permission for so many years they just say NO now. Look for construction sites, and maybe drive to more rural areas and seek permission.

Great finds, love the historical stuff more than coins myself.

WELCOME
Spend some time at local public playgrounds, unless it's illegal. If the playground
isn't pounded by other detectorists then you will find allot of easy targets.
Last year I went to a elementary school at Xmas break and got permission from the janitor.
In my area schools are locked up and no one had been there in a while. I went 3 straight days
for 2-3 hours while the janitor was there and got 350 coins. Good practice and you may even
find decent jewelry. I also hit another playground that dates back to the early 1900's and have
found numerous silver coins including a 1907 barber quarter recently. Last night I found a 1916
mercury dime. I have been in such a slump. I got 2 new permissions on older houses and have been
finding wheat pennies left and right, but no silver. I think I had found about 15 wheats in a row and
bam it was only 3" down under a root.

I lived in Manassas for a decade before I moved out to West Virginia. The White's east coast service center is down town at Centreville Electronics:
