First Hunt and Some Questions

Been lurking for a while and have been wanting to give it a try.

I started out with a small buy $100 in halves. I did get 1 1966 40% that is actually in really good shape (I realize the condition doesn't seem to make a huge difference in the 40%ers.) The silver rims do really stick out like a sore thumb.

I've been reading around, but I'd really like to hear from other hunters. Doing halves is there anything else I should be looking for? I plan to do maybe $100 or $200 at a time so I can take my time looking at each coin and not just rims. I don't want to deal with huge volume at this point (both for buying and dumping concerns). Are there any clad errors or anything else to hunt for that might have value? From what I've read:

-1965-1970 40%
-1964 and earlier 90%
-Proof/Gem coins

What else do YOU keep an eye out for?

Fot the bicentennial they made both clad & 40% silver half dollars. They were both made by the San Francisco mint (S). I also believe they made some 90% silver proofs in the early 2000s. They were also minted at San Francisco. There are other clad errors: 1972 D, 1973 D, 1982 D, 1983 D & 1990 have missing designer initials on the back. They are common errors though.

This is tricky to find, maybe its more obvious than I think it should be...does this look double struck? Around the tops of the center W it seemed different than other 1974 Ds. Thanks!

You should look for mint errors. I've found a few mint errors while looking through halves, my best being one that was partially broadstruck, or the planchet was struck crookedly. There are strike-throughs, laminations, off-centers, blanks, clipped planchets, etc. these are hard to find CRH, but they are still out there.

I am pretty (99.999%) sure that is not the double die. It looks like either damage as Omega said or the broadening effect of being srtuck by a worn die.

Not a "doubled" die. Also a doubled die isn't struck twice. The design is already on the die. Get a Cherrypicker's Guide. Everything you need to know about varieties is there. Or just Google doubled die photos on the web for examples.
