First hunt at 1890's House - A Three Silver Day!!!

Well Folks, I gained permission to an 1890's house that sits on about 3 acres. It is a very cool property that has been restored, even the servants shack. The owner was an elderly lady and very friendly. She gave me a tour of the house, the servants shack, and the other outbuildings. She told me about an old car buried out amongst the bamboo jungle, and about one of the servant ladies that actually died in the old outhouse. She said I am welcome any time, and she even gave me some old NC license plates. I gave her one of my handmade birdhouses and put it up for her.
I hit it for the first time yesterday for about three hours. My second signal was a wheat penny (good sign), and my third signal was a Barber dime! I was all pumped up as I had only been there 5 minutes.
I pretty much just wandered the property trying to get a feel for the place.
My finds for the day were:
*1899 Barber dime
*1942 Merc dime

*Sterling silver knife (?) engraved with a date of "1907" and also the initials "TT" or "FF"? The makers mark says "James Allan & Co." which I believe to be from the 1880's from what I could find.
Any input on the initials or age would be greatly appreciated.
*Seven wheat pennies : 1919, 25, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46.
*Broken brooch, a pin. old compact, lead seal, two unknown bullets (white patina), brass oval whats-it.

Not a bad start. The Barber made my day, but the sterling silver knife trumped it.
Anybody want to dig out the outhouse? :icon_scratch:
Thanks for looking,
MM

Heh...I look out and all I see is snow, well, some day I'll be able to hunt again....till then you take up the slack. Nice finds Doug.:icon_thumleft:

GOD Bless

Chris

SNOW, what's that???? :dontknow: I already mowed my lawn this week here in NC. Flowers have already bloomed, birds are chirping, and I have my summer Speedo's ready to go. :tongue3:
My brother just texted me and said they are supposed to get 3-5" more of snow tomorrow in CT. That sucks!
Good luck this season Chris.

Some people can fall in that outhouse and still come out smelling like a rose! Did you perfect your schmoozing in Indiana, Wisconsin or North Carolina?[emoji1][emoji1]

I'd love to come cut that cane. I honed my fishing skills on the banks of the Cumberland dangling my worm from a cane pole!

Why are you hoping for a Barber quarter? I think there is a Seated ( try looking around the outhouse, lol. Best seat in the house! ) there for you. Was there a mill on the site? That stone is very nice.

I have been saving my detecting finds for you. Once I get another 300 lbs of tin, it will be on it's way. Do you want it dumped in the driveway or just anywhere in the front yard?[emoji6][emoji5]️[emoji4]

LMAO!!!! You crack me up!!!! :laughing7::thumbsup:
My Dad taught me how to schmooz (not smooch). He was a comedian and a salesman. I learned from the best. :laughing7:

A "seated" by the outhouse. Classic Dave! I mentioned a Barber quarter because I can never find them. I've dug coins back to 1775, but I can't find a Barber quarter. I dig dig one about a year ago, but it was toasted in a fire, and was very brittle and in pieces. I don't count that one. :BangHead:

Is that Quindy and Dman fishing the Cumberland. He always has that Cumberland River song at the start of his posts, so it could be? :dontknow: I can see those two youngsters now. Their Mama's tell them to change their underwear, and they just keep switching with each other. Good stink bait for catfish I guess? ???

BTW- Thanks for the offer on the pile of tin. I think Quindy and Dman could use it more than me though. Last I heard they were building a rocket ship to go to the moon. The heard there was CW activity up there, and all of those crated were made by cannonballs. They plan on using cow manure as fuel. Mooooooooon.

Ahhhh, the jokes we could tell if we lived closer.
Thanks for l@@king,
Doug

Congrats on some nice finds. The initials mean send all silver items to Dman. LOL
I'm not sure that would be a good idea D, after seeing how you priced your CW bullets. :tongue3:
This spoon has "1907" engraved into it. You should be able to get $19.07 for it no problem.
Kick Q in the rump for me.

I think you and Dman have a future as business partners.

Mr. Q. would probably even produce your commercials! Have your guy call my guy!

Dave

Dave,
The difference is, Dman's bullets are chEAp, and my birdhouse are chEEp. :laughing7:

Great idea getting Quindy to do the commercials but he is booked into 2020 selling Rascal scooters, Polident, Stair Lifts, Life Alerts, Walk-In bathtubs, and Metamucil. He's a busy old coot!

Nice trifecta of silver Doug - love the spoon!

Thanks Bill. I'm hoping when all said and done, I can write a story about this place for W&ET mag.

THANKS EVERYONE for all the great replies. They are very much appreciated and keep me energized.
I wish you all luck and banner finds out there.

Just saw this thread! This is the kind of thing that inspires me to do the legwork on asking people with good properties if I can hunt there. Awesome finds like this are just waiting for us under the dirt of someone's land. All we have to do is ask permission.

:)

Awesome stuff buddy! I love that knife! Some of those old license plates are worth a small fortune. There's a guy her in Maine who is a crazy collector and has a warehouse full of them. He recently sold one of them for $27,000 to help with his sons college tuition. Yes I said 27k lol. Anyway that's a killer all around hunt buddy. Great job

love the birdhouses, thanks for the pictures - very unique!

Thanks Darrow. Here are some of the birdhouses I made. I gave her one of the tall sunflower houses. The smaller houses I use 100+ year old wormy chestnut barn wood, old roofing tins, etc. I just go down in my workshop and create. It also keeps me out of my wife hair. LOL. :tongue3:

Awesome stuff. Very creative. You should get a page on Pinterest and sell them. (If you don't already)

Cheers!

Thanks CH. I got lucky on this one. The property kind of fell on my lap. I sold some birdhouses to a lady, and told her that I detect old properties. She referred me to this property owner (her friend), and I was in.
Yaba daba doo!

Thanks Abe. I know I can't keep up with you, but 'm trying hard. LOL. :laughing7:
I wonder if that high $ plate was an early number porcelain one from Delaware by chance? I heard people pay big $ for those early DE plates.
Thanks for looking and good luck this year,
Doug

Says the guy with 4 Banners lol. I think you're doing just fine and giving me way too much credit my friend

Awesome finds MM!

Car looks super cool. From first glance it appears to be a 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe. Cool Car. Cool finds. More to come I'm sure.

Hey D,
WOW! What a haul of silver!!! If the Diggers TV guys had been with you, they would have climbed all the trees in the yard!
You had asked me about the knife, so here ya go: Your Sterling Silver butter knife was made by James Allan & Company, which was located on 285 King Street in Charleston, SC., established circa 1885 and continued to circa 1943. Other than Sterling, his company also did silver plate and some aluminum.

Since Sterling Silver flatware was often given as a wedding gift, I'm assuming the date of 1907 is their wedding date, and the monogram is the name of the couple/family.

Way to go on a GREAT hunt!

Thanks. You may be right on the Chevy. You are the second one that said a 1941. I plan to get in there closer next time to figure out whats left of it. There is supposed to be an old International truck in that bamboo too.
