Metal Detecting
I've been stuck on a detecting hiatus for several weeks now due to snow and frozen ground conditions. Well today enough snow melted and the ground thawed just enough for me to finally get out there and actually experience my new E-Trac for the first time in the field. I've been studying numerous youtube videos, reading info posts on here, and diving through the Andy Sabisch handbook so I felt pretty confident in my abilities to operate it. I went to a park that was one of the first established in the area(leased in the 1870's, and fully developed by the early 1890's). Fun fact, President Gerald R. Ford was born right across the street from it in 1913. It seemed like a great place to test the E-Trac's abilities and find some deep old coins. Unfortunately after over 5 hours of hunting, none were found(not even a stinkin wheat). Total clad-1 quarter, 8 pennies, 2 dimes, 1 nickel and a handful of trash. It's a huge park and I only covered a small portion of it so I'm hoping there's more(something older) to this site. None of the coins I found were deep. The deepest was maybe three or four inches, However I was fooled by some nails and bottle tops that had me digging down 7-9 inches. Hopefully the future holds something brighter on my next outing there. Anyway, better luck to you all and HH

It is always fun learning a new machine. Remember to research this area a few months from now when you have the machine figured out. Happy Hunting.

Update:
Ok so I was about to go to bed when I remembered my gear was still in my car. When I got it inside and cleaned everything up I noticed my little zip-lock bag of trash from todays finds, and started to go through them individaully to see if anything had any age to it. I go to what I thought was just a rolled/bent up bottle screw cap but the weight and width of it just didnt look right. I go in the bathroom and start to clean off the mud and am actually able to bend the whole thing back into place. That's when I realize it's not a bottle top and it's made out of tin/aluminum. I've seen people find these online but I had to look up an image since I've only seen the top half of these cans but sure enough it's the bottom of a 3 merry widows tin! Might be gross to some people but I've never found one and it's pretty cool to find something unique like this that was used in the 1920-30's. Would have been nicer to find the top half along with it or a silver but hey, it still makes todays hunt a little more interesting.

My detector hates the cold, Im sure the warmer weather will help soon enough. I don't dig deep in parks, just surface scan on low power and find plenty. Even find rings. Hit the old trees about ten feet out and you will get that silver your looking for. Good Luck.

Keep at it. Today, I will be going out after work with my new X-Terra 705 for the first time. Can't wait.

Thanks, yeah I've done all the research on the park that I could find online. It's hard to distinguish how much the grounds have been moved around and altered since they were established though.

I know trees are a good area to hit and I do it but it's a real pain trying to dig around those monster roots lol.

Same spelling, different meaning. I meant to say that once you learn the new maching go back and search again and see if you missed anything. Sorry for the confusion.

Bullhead your my hero.... The ground is frozen so hard her in iowa-- I would need a jackhammer to get through it. Sounds like your off to a great start with your new machine. Looking forward to hunting with you some time... Want to see how well my v3i will hold up to the E-Track PM me with any date you have available
