I got word of an 1830's cellar hole near me and decided to check it out. Lots and lots of trash and just wasn't in to digging through the crap today. Left the cellar hole and got on the farm road. And decided to swing the road out

First signal 1" down. With beer cans all around and out pops my first large cent!!!!

It's pretty bad shape. And looks to be 1842 from seeing it in person and unfourtanetly the date doesn't show on pics

Will electrolysis clean it up any more??

This was the afternoon hunt

For the morning I finished off the house built in 1900. And pulled a 1950 Rosie So the last week has been beyond great

This week

1881 and 1884 Indian head
1925 buffalo nickel
14k gold ring
Ivory cameo brooch
1950 Rosie
And 1843 large cent!!!!
Hopefully next week is the same lol

Congrats!

Salt mixed into vinegar then lightly with a q-tip -- you'll take a micron or two away from the penny but it should bring out the details a bit better

Way to go, congrats on your first large cent! Yep, looks like 1842 to these old eyes. Unfortunately, the coin is heavily corroded and IMO you should just enjoy it as it is. I don't believe cleaning will help it. Still a great catch.

Congrats on an awesome first. Throw that baby in a case or display and love it for what it is. An awesome find and a first for you

Congrats Turbo! Landed my first LC today as well. I see you swing a Eurotek Pro, just curious do you remember what VDI it came in as?

That's beyond a great week. I loved that brooch. I just found my first large cent too. I wish we could find more around where we live.

Thanks guys. Any year large cent has been on the top of my want list!! Now time to pound the woods and find the old silver !!!

I didn't think it was going to clean up any better. So I will just leave it as is

I found an old brass buckle as well in the area and got it in electrolysis now. I will post pics of it in the morning

From what I remember the vdi reading was 87-88

Usually an LC will come up between 86-88 on a Teknetics machine. I think I've found 12 and all were in that range. I know when I get an 88 I'm excited. Twice it's been Spanish silver which will really get you excited :-)

I would never electrolyze a dug coin. There's too much risk of damaging it.

My method is hot peroxide first, then just handling it (carry it in a pocket for a few days). The oil from your fingers will get into the pores and give it a nice dark color and the detail will come out. Of course, this depends on the overall corrosive detail loss, but yours looks like it should be okay.

Congrats on your first LC! There's probably more where that came from... Under all those modern beer cans and pull tabs!

Thanks for the VDI number Turbo and Ahab, just wanted to confirm since I have only found the 1 myself. Wanted to see if that is the range to expect. Thanks again!

Congrats on your first large cent. You'll find it's also a lot of fun to find your second, third and so on. I've been on a large cent roll the last couple of years. Found more than 15 so far this year as well as a few colonials and it never gets boring.

Very nice find congrats. You had an awesome week!!! GL&HH.

Thanks everyone. I can't wait to get back to this site
I am a little unsure how to work this site

The foundation is visible but a lot of larger stones are in the middle. Is it worth it to clean out te inside of the foundation and hope some good stuff ended up in the dirt over the years??

Also the old well is about 10ft away from the foundation. It has filled itself in over the years.
Is it worth it to excavate the dirt back out?

There is also a root cellar that is still intact but kinda scared to go in to it. The only opening is a 2x2 square

I forgot to add the pic of the coin in the hole to see how shallow it was

And also showing a pic of the well and the foundation. The area is really grown in right now so hard to see

And a pic of the root cellar? Darn kids and their beer cans

Very nice digs, nothin like those large cents

Congrats on your first large cent! Looks like a good spot just hunt it slow and dig all signals to get the junk out if the way and bet you dig a few more from there! Good luck and HH!

The foundation is visible but a lot of larger stones are in the middle. Is it worth it to clean out te inside of the foundation and hope some good stuff ended up in the dirt over the years?? Yes. I've always heard about historic sites that excavate basements and summer kitchen floors to find lots of interesting artifacts. Might be worth your while to take a sifter with you.

Also the old well is about 10ft away from the foundation. It has filled itself in over the years.
Is it worth it to excavate the dirt back out? Not the dirt inside the well, but I would definitely hit the area around it very carefully.

Do not enter any underground area like that on your own. Take a friend, maybe attach a camera to a toy RC truck and send it in first.

See above.

It will take more than a sifter to get the cellar cleaned out. Tons of big stones litter the inside where they collapsed on from the foundation

I started to move some out yesterday to begin clearing it

The gentleman who showed me this site said he would think that over the years there had to be some coins that fell into the cracks in the floor and into the cellar

I think your LC look quite solid indeed, with most of the detail there, and because of that I do think it's eye appeal could definitely be improved.

As far as clearing out the entire cellar hole, yes no doubt there will be some finds there, there is going to be truck loads to be removed to get down to the original floor. It's up to you, but that is going to be a lot of effort. I guess another point is the owner OK with you doing such a thing.
