First Large Cent !!!!!!

3 hour hunt today in the woods paid off . This past Wednesday I finally broke 1900 and found a coin 1899, now I found my first large cent 1842! Later on I found another large cent the date is unreadable great hunt I'm into the 1800's can't be happier.

I'm so excited I feel like a kid again lol

Congrats on two large cents! The other dates from 1816 to the early 1830s. Not sure when in the 30s they modified the head style.

Put that second one in hot peroxide for a couple minutes then brush it with a toothbrush and I bet you'll get a date off of it!

Matron head variety? Never heard of that, thanks I'll do some research on it.

give her a hot peroxide bath for 1 hour repeat if desired. the crud will boil off with a lot of the green. you will be amazed. my '35 from this week after bath and soap/toothbrush scrub. she cleaned up real good

It works GREAT on wheat pennies and indian heads, and does a decent job on large cents. I wouldn't do it to a coin that's worth anything, but on one you can barely identify, it's a good idea.

Well here it is, thanks for all your help and advice I gave it the bath and it looks like 1818 !!! I couldn't be happier !

Such an old coin an important find for me personally. I can't wait to get into the 1700s next lol.

The benefit of a peroxide bath varies depending on the nature of the coin.

If the coin is deeply pitted, a peroxide bath will make it look horrible.

If the coin has only hard-to-remove surface dirt, peroxide will make it look awesome.

I think your Large Cent looks awesome as it is. It has great detail. Peroxide might improve it, but it might make it worse. It's a tough call. My advice would be to leave your nice Largie alone. At least for now.

I think you'll find more in the future. Some maybe a little rougher than this one. Maybe you'll want to experiment with those before trying this one. It's all up to you of course, but that's a mighty nice first Large Cent, just as it sits.
