Not too well with the points today. An ironstone blunt a beat up bifurcate and some other brokes. Did find a nice mortar or metate. Don't know the difference between them. A couple tools and some pottery. Did find part I an axe and I'm all most positive the rest of it is packed in a box in the new house. Trying to talk wifey into letting me go up and open some boxes to find it. It will eat me up till I do. Ill show you all if it fits.

I believe they are the same thing. The term "metate" generally means one found in the Southwest.

That's what I was thinking. Thought it had to do with region. Thanks

It is a nice one also. Here was say mortar and pestle. It gets me confused as well. Is it cupped on both sides? Saw you other post how cool is that axe going back together?

It isn't double cupped. I wish. It has a rounded bottom and its longer then wide so it sits in you lap perfect. Don't know if it was used that way but it sure seems like it. And yes that axe has made my day. Never thought I'd find any other part if it.

Forgot to put in the picture to show the bottom shape.

A mortar is what you have. A metate is flat and usually has a dimple on one side of it. A mortar is designed like the one you found. I have found both types. Looks like you had a special hunt to find all of that and the ax has a deep groove in it, very nice.

my collection4.jpg The bowl is a mortar and the long stone is the pestal. my collection3.jpg The metate is flat and the mano's are the flat grinder stones sitting on the matate. There are also two small "bowls" or mortars in the lower right of that photo. my collection2.jpg In this picture the mortar and pestel are on left, a matate and mano are in the center, and a matate is leaning up against the wall in the left rear.

I think porcelain is what separates the two. Mortar and pestle are made of porcelain. Don't hold me to that, but if Alex Trebeck ask me that for $200.00, there is my answer.
