Had an hour to kill this evening while the kidlets were at choir practice so I decided to hit a new field in the fading twilight.

in the dim light I found this button but could not make anything out till I got home. Boy was I excited after the guys in the WII forum helped me pin
it down to Rev War Naval Captian or Commanders button. I knew there was activity on this sight but was very surprised by this early Christmas present.

Can't wait to get back out there.

Thanks for looking and HH.

Thanks I hope so, but I'm not holding out too much hope, I started a grid pattern and only had three good repeating targets in one hour.

That's a great find Bob! Need to find one for my display case now. Good going! Bill

Thanks Flatbuttonman, me too love finding them. i was really surprised when I cleaned this one as I had never found a flat military button before. hopefully there is more to find out there but the past few times I've been out my detector has been pretty quiet. Going to have to work hard to find any others.

Bob i think they were wrong on the id

Are you holding onto your seat ;D

What you have there i believe is a
GEORGE WASHINGTON INAUGURAL BUTTON :hello2: :notworthy: :headbang:

Here is one in the Cobb collection 4th row down 4th button over

I believe that is it

Good eye :icon_thumleft:

Notice how the rope/chain pattern is exactly the same :icon_scratch:

They made many different varieties of the same button..

The Cobb collection was what he owned not every variety of every button.

I would definately investigate this button more

Gah thank God I was holding my seat, my heart skipped a beat for a min.

but I can see the difference between the rope and the anchor so I don't think it is the same, but close. Same rope pattern.

Classed as Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Original shank.

Harold labeled this as part of the "Breeches Find" where 12 GW inaugurals were found on a pair of naval breeches along with three navy buttons. This is one of the naval buttons.
J. Doyle DeWitt purchased the breeches with one of the Eagle and Stars GW's still attached, as well as one of the navy buttons.

Sally Luscomb got one, and Harold got the last.

David F. Johnson and a Col. Campbell declared they were the first Continental Navy buttons found to date.

Purchased in 1961 from J.J. Goldberg (B.J. Johnson)

Bob,
That is a nice button. I am curious about something and hope you can answer my question. What reference did the ID come from? I can't find this button in Tice's or Albert's button books. Of course, I may be overlooking it.

Oh and that's a nice one too..I dug the cuffs to match it a few months ago. That's one of my favorite finds. Great Button

I dug a chain one, but it's the exact same ID as your button. The only reason the Navy buttons were in Cobb's collection was because they were with the GW buttons... and if you check the price, which I think was about $300, it's consistent with what a non dug Royal Navy Captain's button could get. (even without a GW connection) I sold a non dug one about 6-7 years ago for $250. $300 was nothing more than spare change when you look what the best got the day of that auction.

Nice piece of history, thanks for sharing. :icon_thumleft:

If you look at the writing underneath the button in the Cobb collection,
It says "breeches find Continental navy 1789" :dontknow:
Ohh i see Allan's post now with the story :tongue3:

I think i was more excitied than you were :laughing9: :tongue3:
