Okay, before I start, you should know that my camera is dead so no pictures yet.
Pictures are up! Thanks for looking!

So today Bob and I went out to one of our favorite hot spots (the field where I found my 1809 half cent), and we started detecting around 2. Things started off kinda slow, but then I found an 1897 V-Nickel. First old coin of the year! But certainly not the oldest of the year, but well get to that later. So after a little while we decided to go to the other side of the field since we really never hit there. It turns out that that side is even quieter. So we started to head back to the other side, but we found out that the middle was the best spot after Bob dug up a 1781 half reale and I dug up a fragment of a quite old shoe buckle. So we stay in that area, and I wasnt finding much. But then Bob dug up a reale, bringing his total to 1 1/2. So then I start a new row, and right on top I found my first silver spoon handle! As you will see, it had a lot of detail and design on it. So then we stayed a little longer, then began to head to a different field.

So we crossed into another field, heading to the field where Bob four his first draped bust LC, hoping to mind me MY first large cent. The crossover field was a bust, and as we were about halfway through, Norma pulled up. She gave me a ride to get my jacket which I had left at the other end of the field, and then gave me a ride to the field where we were going. Bob calls this field the pottery field, for there is just pottery everywhere. But there were many footprints, although there was no steady pattern, so we were able to find some unhunted areas. I was swinging in a row, with Norma surface hunting next to me, and I noticed that I was walking in the other hunters footsteps (who, by the way was a messy hole-filler) so Norma and I move over to the next row. Same story, so we move once more. I finally found a good row, and I started hunting. Norma wandered off to my right, and she was a little but away when i got a solid $.50 signal. As I was pinpointing with my detector, it appeared to be long, like a can, so I didn't get my hopes up, although I was still careful while retrieving it. Good thing, cause when I removed the plug, it broke in half and revealed a big silver disk. I could see the eagle and HALF DOL. and I yelled "Norma l, get over here!" (now that I think about it, I sounded angry lol) so she comes over, and I take it off of the plug, and we both wow over it. Next we proceeded to walk towards Bob, who is boasting and bragging about the clay marble he just found. We could only laugh. So then he asks what I found, and Norma yelled "Tree coin!" and then I was cracking up! So now he's freaking out, but in between laughs I say no, it isn't a tree coin. We finally reached him, and he made a remark about how poor shape it's in (which shows how bad his vision without glasses is). We then discovered that it is an 1877-S. Everyone was excited, and I no longer had the urge to find a large cent on that hunt. Bob and I hunted a little longer, but didn't find much more. So then we got something to eat and we headed home.

Thanks for reading and happy hunting!
-Anthony.

Actually no, the coin was right in the middle of my plug, it was already like that. You can't really tell in the pictures, but that damage has already started to tarnish so it has a bit of age to it.

Congrats! That is awesome!

Way to go on the seated , CONGRATS, still waiting for my first seated coin :hello:

Thank you, and I hope you find one soon! It will get you when you least expect it. When I or the signal for mine, I would have bet $20 that it was a can. When bob found his only seated half, he also thought is was going to be a can, and almost didn't did it. Good thing Norma was with him :p

Fantastic find! Where in Western Ma are you? I hunt the Southampton/Westhampton area a lot.

nice un :icon_thumleft: MR TUFF

@oxbowbarefoot I'm more north of you. But I found this in northampton. Location undisclosed ;)

Really great find Relic Hunter and welcome to the Seated Liberty Half Dollar Club! I know exactly how you feel, since I also found an 1877-s Seated Liberty Half Dollar back in November, 2007, that I posted here on T-Net. I'm sure, like me, it's a day you'll never forget! WTG!
