Was back on a CW battle site today that has been producing nice round balls, three ringers and shell fragments. Ran into an area with a lot of nails and got a good coin signal. Dug my first silver ever, a 1796 Mexican Republic 1/2 Reales coin. These were minted from 1792-1808. It can be found in the World Coin Gallery, km72. My hunting buddy Buckleboy was not with me today but I immediately gave him a call. He has insisted in the past that my first silver would not be something from the 40s or 50s. Little did I know it would be from another century! Great start for 2012! I made some corrections. The coin is a 1/2 reale. The World Coin Gallery has some mistakes.

Thats as good as it gets!!!! :icon_thumleft:

It's a beautiful coin, but I think is a Carolus IIII from Spain, not the republic of Mexico.

Cheers

Nice Spanish silver! :icon_thumright: Beats my oldest silver by 30 years, and it's a 1/2 Reale as well.

Nutriasub, now I'm really confused. The World Coin Gallery list this exact coin as a Republic of Mexico coin but they have some mistakes. Are they listing it totally in the wrong place? Also the area that it was found was settled by lots of Spanish, I thought, from Mexico back in the 1700s. Excuse my knowledge of history, I really want to learn all about it. Cheers, Shane

Congrats, on nice early silver.

Hopefully there are more out there for you.
