First solid find of '08, Ink Well

Hunting a fill site with lots of debris and was really getting frustrated. My machine isn't the best for that type of stuff. 10 minutes left before I have to leave and pick up the little one from school, they decide to move a tractor... I walk in behind and boom, eye candy, it's a miracle this didn't get smashed and more of a miracle I was lucky enough to snag it on my way out....

Side note, I was scraping pennies in the sand box at a local playground and had a lady flip out on me (I ended up putting the detector away). I need to call the city to find out the law on that...anyway...here is a beauty if you're in to ink wells...8 sided....

Very cool bottle....I hope you get to go back there and hunt some more. School is public property ,you have the right to be there, plus the fact that you would be removing anything harmful to the kids goes a long way .....I would have laughed at her.....the only time I wont hunt school is when its in session....

SADLY, SADLY mistaken!

Public property does NOT grant the one the right to detect, or do WHATEVER they want to do! Yes, sometimes I think that it is a load of cr@p that we aren't allowed to hunt on public property, but simply being a taxpaying citizen doesn't grant you the right to do what you want, when you want, how you want! It DOES, however, grant you the right to question your city officials regarding such laws or regulations in place that keep you from detecting there. And voice in the elections to vote to change things! Democracy at its finest!

Check with your officials before you dig! Never assume public property grants you the right to dig there!

Anyway... nice ink well!

That is really a sad thing that you are in a town or state that doesnt allow it. Where I live there are no rules against it.....I have hunted about twenty five school grounds and have had everyone from the principals, jainitors school board members and anyone else who happens by to stop and be curious about my finds....Was never kicked off a school ground yet....but maybe thats just here.....I also hunt any town own property with out any problem.....I have been told several times by the town board members that they havent instilled any laws or even tried to because there has never been a need to. Just fill my holes and I personally will not hunt on manicured grass.
I hunt any public park, public owned property and town property, city owned lots and fairgrounds with out any problems and have been doing so for the past ten years.

We have free reign in my particular county on public property, but there are parks close by with historical significance that are indeed public property, but require permits to hunt. Some are off limits to detecting period.

My assertion is that you seemed to imply that it is your right to hunt it because its public property. As I stated, that's not the case. Check with the local authorities (as you have done) and if they say it's okay, then knock yourself out!

Not trying to start an argument, just want to clear the air. I'd hate to see someone get in trouble because they thought it was their "right" to hunt public property.

Happy Hunting!!!

No problem....I think that anyone who has read enough of my posts on Tnet knows where I stand on this issue and have always advocated Permission first ...as well as know the rules and regulations of your individual State ........I tend to forget that all the New members and even some of the older ones havent read these prior posts ...although the subject is repeatedly brought up.

My favorite style of inkwell. My favorite color of glass also. Great find.

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

lol... I was gonna start a general discussion thread about hunting city parks...I want to relish my ink well with this one ;D

The ink well spot and the playground are 2 different places. I put my detector away when the lady flipped... "my husband works for the city parks and I know what he'd think about you doing this"..she says.... I think, "if he's married to you he's probably eating lunch at hooters drooling over the waitress wishing he was somebody else"...but I didn't say it :P.

Beetledude is right about parks in my area and I only argue when I'm right, so I'll find out the law regarding different parks (alot are historical sites). Being new at detecting, I like being able to answer, "yes I do", when asked if I have permission to be doing what I'm doing where I'm doing it...so that being said.... I was at another park this afternoon at got called down by an older woman for skateboaring on the tennis court.... sheesh, I'm chasing a 3 year old on a tricycle... must be the hair an 2 week shadow.... ::)

back to the ink well, first good find of 2008!

Great find and comments, as well...

No right or wrong, you both are correct...it depends on the municipality...

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

great inkwell, I've got one too but yours is a lot older and blue. mines clear glass with a cork top.

side bar: when hunting public property, be smart, don't hunt a school while it's in session.
hunt parks when few people are around, it draws less attention

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

Very Nice indeed.

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

That's an awesome piece of glass Chitlin....Can't believe it survived this long.Nice snag!!!

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

Terrific Ink Well, never seen one like it before. Here in West Michigan the rules are all over the place. Schools are fair game; county parks are off limits; the city has signs on some parks that say no metal detecting except by permit. Another Tnet member told me he called the city for a permit and they told him they no longer issue them and he was free to detect...I will call the city myself to verify that before I hit any more city parks. I've never been chased from a city park or from a school.

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

Any idea as to how old this inkwell might be? I, too, LOVE the color!

Gypsyheart.. my humblest apologies if I offended you!!!

Re: First solid find of '08, Ink Well

Really like that inkwell...it will display well...I also am curious about the age....Here in Missouri we can hunt public property at free will....historic sites, are off limits, and one needs a permit to hunt core of engineer property...I have heard of some towns requiring a permit or even outlawing metaldecting because of detectorist in the past not filling in holes....But not here in Missouri....Steve
