The machine probally wasn't ground balanced.

Easy answer. You began the learning curve. Whether there was stuff there isn't the issue. It sounds like too much digging without a good target description. Next time try a test bed.. Dump a few goodies and a few bad in a testing area... Learning based on facts really makes a difference. Read around and choose a brand/type. To explain everything would take hours... But truely between everyone hear... most of us want to help..

To get started. Pick type of machine:
VLF (Very Low Frequency) Great Identification! Minimal depth.
OR-
PI (Pulse Induction) No Identification.. Maximum depth.

Then type of detecting. Salty Beach, Gold nugget prospecting, or Relic/Coin/Jewler. Or even Under water ect...

Some machines are specialized. Some are general. VLF low freq = great coins... VLF Higher freq = better prospecting... Now it's your turn... Ask us a question....
P.S. Getting into brand names will bring on alot of testosterone.... (Snicker)

it Was a very basic machine something like a hunter something, sorry i cant remember for some reason. Thank you all for the replies. I did i guess in a way try some trial and error. i buried some pocket change for my daughter, Zinc, copper, nickel etc. and the detector hit on all of them. i actually have a friend who makes aliving about 3 months a year down there, just metal detecting

Well I think if your really serious about detecting on the beach, I would find out what your buddy is using and buy a detector like his.

Another suggestion, even with the detector your using. Put some coins, rings, jewelry and pull tabs down and see where they come in on you detector. I would do this at the beach you are trying to hunt. Some of these items may not even show up on your detector.

You might also try turning your sensitivity down some.

Good luck!
