Spring may be here but it forgot this last weekend. Temperatures in the 40s with high winds and rain. Not the best weekend for swingin my detector at the normally warm sunny beach.
OCEAN CITY
There is a lot of beach in Ocean City. They use heavy equipment to keep the sand as smooth as possible by dragging and beach groomers. So sometimes things get moved around.
I spent 7.5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 30 coins with a face value of $2.36 (not very good for the beach), a zipper pull, a mini skateboard, some cheapie jewelry, key and a piece, a .22 short casing, part of a paint brush, a Dolle’s squashed penny, a metal tag, a pencil end, a toy car, foil and some tabs. Nothing great and not much gas money.
REHOBOTH BEACH
It was cold and the winds were fierce. The ocean was almost up to the dunes and there was a thick layer of foam covering a lot of the beach. I swung on the beach and walkovers for about an hour and didn’t find anything so I moved to a spot off the beach and did find a few things.
I spent 2.5 hours swingin the CZ21 before the weather sent me back to the hotel. I found 28 coins with a face value of $1.76, pieces of a brass wire clamp, a wheatie, a chromed cap, a sinker, part of someone’s glasses, an aluminum cord lock, a little foil and some tabs. Again nothing great and not much gas money.
BETHANY BEACH
A lot of the dune has washed away and when high tide hits, there’s very little beach left exposed. It was a cold winter so the beach wasn’t used much. The beach as a whole was pretty empty and I spent most of my time at areas off the beach.
I spent 8 hours swingin the CZ21 and found a total of 96 coins with a face value of $9.07, 2 wheaties, a Canadian quarter, a toy car, cheapie jewelry, foil, tabs and WW2 ordinance washed out of the exposed dune.
The beach only gave up $0.62, 2 quarters, 2 nickels and 2 pennies in the coin department. Up close to the dunes is where I found all the ordinance and I did find the fishing lure bracelet which was a fresh loss. Everything else came from areas off the beach.
The wheaties are a 1941 in great shape and a 1958 D that is pretty crusty. The Canadian quarter is a newer one and I did find my first 2026 250th anniversary US quarter. I haven’t seen this one in circulation yet out here in the boonies.
The bracelet is a cool design that is a first for me. My little finger puppet shark thought it might taste good. It is made from a PHEOBE lure and fishing swivel snaps. There are a lot of different designs available for sale on line.
The ordinance is mostly obturator (brass traveling band) from .20mm and .40mm shells with one small piece of detonator. You can see the rifling on one side and the hash mark indentations on the other side to help it break into shrapnel.
Not a great week, but a long way from sucked and I did find have some fun. Not a great finish to year number 24 of detecting. Not my best year by a long shot, but also not my worst.
