Relic Hunting
Sunday was the first time I have been hunting since Fourth of July weekend so I wanted to go to a place that I knew would be productive so I went to a park that has produced some wheats earlier this year. I found some remnants of an old house and right away I found a Mercury dime. It was heavily encrusted in dirt so I waited to get home to clean. Then not too far from there I got a wheat penny. The dirt was very dry in some areas and the wheat was stuck in a dirt clod. Then I found a pin or brooch shortly after that. The merc was only about 4" and the wheat about 2" but that pin was about 8" deep. I found a little clad and a few wazzit pieces. I tried to hunt the shaded areas but all the good stuff was out in the hot sun so I had to call it a day after a while. Also had a guy stopped by and visited with me and he wanted to know if I would like to hunt some property that are in his family. He said there are several colonial style homes that date back to the 1800's and one has some civil war activity on it. We exchanged phone numbers because he was telling about so many places there was no way I could remember them all. We must have talked for about an hour then I went back to hunting but with his info and my finds I had a pretty productive day.

Silver makes a great Hunt!
Nice Frog, looks like there was a big stone there

Congrats on the Silver Randy and for being a 'True Grit' and getting out in the heat to dig :occasion14:

I do believe your detector is properly tuned for relic season Randy. Nice finds and it's smart to get the phone number so you can follow up on potential sites. Many opportunities have been lost when hunters try to just remember the info. I'm glad you "broke the ice" (so to speak), Quindy.

Thanks Josh. This park in near the Battle of Fort Sanders and is on the Confederate side of the attack. There has been a lot of relics found nearby. One of the reasons I "attacked" it. lol

Thanks Quindy. I am sooooo ready for relic season to get here. I had a great visit with this guy. He is a military collector and he even knows my cousin who is well known by the WWII collectors. We got to talking about our civil war ancestors and I invited him to attend our SCV meeting this Sunday. His wife called while we were talking and she told him "tell him I want to join the UDC". He lives next to the park and he was telling me where the Confederates came thru to attack Fort Sanders. Some of his relatives live where the cannon placements were located and he wants me to hunt there and see what can be found. It may be too hot for relics here but I am loading up for this fall. I have been getting some great sites and permission to hunt them.
