03/09/2021 Spotted Bass - Lake Martin

Frost was on the pumpkin this morning with a forecasted low temp of 36 and a high of 74. Gary and I launched at Kowaliga and fished from ~ 8:00AM - 1:00PM west of the bridge. Mild wind and clear and sunny skies gave way to clouds moving in around noon. Water temp rose from 53 -> 56. We caught 'em 10' up to 30'+ deep. These 19 out of 20 averaged ~ 1 1/4# and yielded 5 pints of fillets.

On the phone last night it was agreed to fish today being bedding season and the full moon plus some fantabulous weather...we fished our favorite lake for about 3 hours...did pretty good too! I finally got to ingest a huge fish sandwich from a restaurant on the way home...ahh...both felt real good! Enjoy!
sorry, I didn't take pix of the sandwich...:laughing7:

It looks like you guys had fun in the sun.

And another big mutton snapper.

Too cold here for me to fish, so it's that time of year I build or refinish fishing rods. My latest project is a Heddon Deluxe President Model # 50 8 1/2' bamboo flyrod. This version of this model was made from 1948 to 1954.

It has Nickel Silver blackened ferrules and a walnut reelseat with Nickel Silver fittings. The Model # 50 was one of their higher-end rods at the time.

It's ready to fish and I plan on using it in Wisconsin in April, if it warms up!

Lake Martin Alabama Spotted Bass

I wish Gary and I could have done better today but we earned every one we caught. We fished west of Kowaliga bridge from 8:00 - 2:00. At first, it was ~ 55 degrees and sunny skies turned to partly cloudy by noon. High was 78 degrees for the day. Water temp was ~ 63 and the wind changed from none at first, then up to ~ 10 mph, then backed off to 4--5 mph by the time we left. They bit much better after 11:00 which is unusual. Here's 19 out of 20 that yielded four pints of fillets. They were not quite as big as our last catch from 03/09.
