"For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.
For want of a horse, the battle was lost.
From loss of the battle, a war was lost."

Out with nature and my God today. Woods
are wet and the streams are still flowing.

Think my best find of the day was this sitting
tree. Two trunks, connected on the bottom.
Almost like a couch in the woods. ;D

Came across this very old dam, that a farmer
must have put in. Creek is muddy with a bit of
water but nothing like the first picture and other
creeks in the area

Moving along a small creek I came across this
blind above me. (this is a no hunting area now).

Figured it was an old blind. Until I moved
about 30 yards back of it.
Dead deer, animals have been feasting on it.
Looked for the head, figured some animal
had dragged it off, no luck.

After thinking a bit, perhaps it was some crazy
out in the woods hunting, and all the jerk took
was the head. Never will know. >:(

Came across some old foundations,

and some newer ones.

Not much on finds, again. :-\
Bunch of shotgun shells, barbed wire,
can/bottle opener and a heart shaped
horseshoe.

Have never come across a closed horseshoe.
Would some of you livestock folks tell me
why this shape? ??? Also always hang my
horseshoes with the open end up, for the luck.
What do I do with this one? ???

All in all an enjoyable day. Sometimes life can
be good, just slowing down and enjoying it.

all have a good un..

PBK,

your going to laugh at me ;) ;D

Have you tried Peet's. Not that expensive
and is available at many locations. Think I
have two stores in my general area, and also
some Dominick's chain stores carry it.
If they do not carry you can ask them
if they would carry it.(approved item)

Check out the web site:
http://www.peets.com/shop/shop.asp
You will be able to check for a location
near you.

First received some as a gift.
I like the Peet's Assam Golden Tip.
They also have Assam Extra Fancy
but it cost a lot more and I think I'm
just as happy with the Tip.

O.K.
You can laugh now ;D ;D ;D

have a good un............

Well, if I ever did risk a giggle, it wouldn't be about that, for Peet's sake! :D

Actually, they have some very fine tea and coffee, too.

I usually buy from Upton's, who offer an exceptionally nice selection of Assams (and other teas as well) in all price ranges.
In addition to Nahorhabi, right now I'm also brewing varieties of Mokalbari, Marengi, and Hattiali, along with an obscenely expensive (and frankly, somewhat disappointing... or deflating) Duflating.

When I'm in a hurry, or lazy, I'll resort to Taylor's Yorkshire Gold teabags. Best deal on those, by far, is from BritishExpress.

Can't go back up in the hills and dig sassafras anymore, but I've had a gracious plenty of it in my time!

Anyway, many thanks for the Tip tip...

Cheers!

Sherm,

Nice pics and story, thanks for taking us along.....

D.

Cool shoe Sherm, I been going to some pretty secluded spots with a local guy, lately mostly we find neat relic stuff, He found a 1918 buff not 100 yds from my house last weeekend, I found a very old pocket knife and a old cigarett case in the middle of a hay fied (once was cotton) we also found a bullet field we are gonna check out this weekened we found a old springfield round there so we hope it may be a confederate training area I hope to show something. I love going where most folks dont, I hope you have someone to go with you.

Wow, looks like such a good place to hunt...err, detect.

You're a creative one! Clever 'lil face...

You really did make it seem as though we were along with ya!

Interesting, last time I was out, only some days ago, I found a dead deer too. And, there's no hunting in the area as well...yet, I hear shooting back off in them woods all the time. Many of my finds are casings, old and new.

Supposed to be beautiful out tomorrow, I'll be heading out for sure. Not the usual place, but heading to the city...probably just find more casing there too (Detroit) LOL...j/k!

A solitary walk in the woods, love it!! One of my favorite things to do, thanks for sharing with us, Sherm. ;D

Neat finds too, love that face. :)

;) RR

Nice horseshoe man Baron!

Nice post Sherm, enjoyed it! HH, Mike

FWIW - was out in the Crooked Creek area - came across four fresh raccoon carcases. When I was going back to the car, there was a work party leaving another part of the woods. Talked to the supervisor about what I'd found, and your find. He told me that there has been an enormous amount of poaching in all the Divisions of Palos, but budgets have been pared over the years, so, on the average weekend day, maybe there are 2 people on duty in a division. Weekdays are not a whole lot better he said! The FPD police are not in much better shape. Talked to a young fellow who was checking up on a group of interns working Orland Grasslands, he said that he was covering his 'normal' beat in the Cal City - Lansing area, and had to cover as far West as Orland because of staffing problems. Found a pile of eratics and shaped limestone at Cherry Hill woods that might have been a small building once. Also, was at Hidden Pond - found a poured foundation about 5 ' square that I was told was once a storage site/cooler for milk awaiting pickup. Was told that this area was not cropped - mostly cattle, dairy. Couldn't prove it by me, but it does explain why there is barbed wire in the area. Gotta remember to check the batteries in the camera before I go out. Hey, at least I remembered to charge the batteries in the DFX!

The deer was most likely shot by someone who only wounded it. It most likely died a day or two later. Sound like a good hunt even though the finds were sparse. Thanks for the pics.

Great place to go walking. One of these days I'm going to sell my place down here in the flat lands and git up that way.

:-\ Sad about the deer.

But great pictures and story! Love that horseshoe! ;D

Nana ;)

:D TUFF TO PLAY HORSE SHOES SHERM, I GOT ONE OF THOSE TOO!

Very nice hunt in the nature and nice pics too(except that headless bird :))

That hunting area(nature) is very similiar looking to those wich I hunt most. But now its like -15 and snow have landed so it is going to take over 5 freaking months before I can go detecting again. Well, must use that time reading TN posts, doing research, learning new things about this hobby, summer 2007 and I am going to find that treasure cache :). But still its a long time. What is the weather there Sherman? How many moths you can hunt? Oh. and must ask that garrett you are using, I own a Ace 250 and very very happy owner but still thinking upgrading it to some other better model. I dont understand why Ace 250 is not suitable etc. for cache hunting but some other Garrett models are, is that GTI a good choise? And have you heard does these "better" Garretts have very big diffrerences how deep they go, how much deeper your GTI goes than my Ace 250?

Excellent post! Yes I have found one of those closed horse shoes too. I restore all of the shoes I find, I paint them various colours and hang them between our big garage doors for everyone to see. I'll post a picture of them soon. I now have six more I found over the summer that I am restoring. Time in the woods with a detector is great especially in the cool weather with no bugs. Your post makes we want to go back out there right now.
