Digital mappers rediscover Forbes Trail

In 1758, British Gen. John Forbes and his army used brute strength and axes to carve the Forbes Trail through about 300 miles of Pennsylvania wilderness from Philadelphia to Fort Duquesne at the head of the Ohio River.
Two hundred and fifty years later, historians and digital mapping specialists rediscovered the Forbes Trail, including the 200-mile Forbes Road cut from Carlisle to Pittsburgh, said Laura Fisher, director of the nonprofit group French and Indian War 250 Inc.

"That path they cut was really an extraordinary engineering feat. It opened up the West in a way nothing had before. It became the path to what would become the gateway to the West," Fisher said.

Today, the group plans to introduce a Web site -- www.forbestrail.org -- to commemorate Forbes' efforts, Western Pennsylvania and the French and Indian War.
