forged iron ring?

Any ideas what this ring was used for? It seems forged iron.

The picture is of a US 32-pounder stand of grape shot (1856 -1861). It has nine iron balls surrounded by two rings and the top and bottom plate and center bolt.

Here is a more detailed description of "stand of grape" cannon balls:
"This Civil War and earlier-era projectile is made of iron grape shot. The iron grapes are stacked in a "stand" and held in place by outer rings. Metal plates are bolted on both ends. The hemp rope is attached to the top plate for ease in transportation and loading. This cylindrical assembly was pushed into the tube of a cannon and fired. The force of the cannon's blast would hurl the grapes toward the enemy. These were commonly used by the Navy to take down masts and riggings during sea battles between opposing ships."

I'll say this ring is part of a stand of grape shot (civil war era).

The only thing I can suggest is to take it by the Sebastian museum. If you havent been there lately, it is worth the trip. You need to go on a weekday to talk to the curator. Hes not there on weekends I found out.
