Local Woman Unearths History of Destroyed Hotel and Railway

Elaine Ebersole Conrad lived on Wopsy Mountain for decades. Her home was on the site of the former Wopsononock Hotel. It was a resort that attracted many folks from the area for picnics in the summertime to escape the heat. It was only around for 13 years when it was destroyed in a forest fire. The Wopsy railroad used to run from Juniata up the mountain and it carried guests up to the lookout. She shows us many photos she found over the years and newspaper articles with advertisements. We talk about the little known history and whether some of the legends on Wopsy Mountain are grounded in any truth. Today, the railroad bed is a gorgeous hike in central Pennsylvania
