I found what I think is an old picnic spot in the middle of the woods near a little pond. I've been looking for new places to go and saw this pond on Google maps, so I took a hike into the woods.

Very first coin I found was the Seated quarter, just below the surface. You know that feeling...when you've hit upon a place it seems no one else has detected? Man, I was pumped. So, between Thursday and Friday also found a Barber quarter, two Barber dimes, two mercs, four IH, a Liberty nickle and three Buffs, a Masonic(?) pendant, 2 pins and 2 buttons, as well as a lot of junk and some clad.

Except for the seated, which you can see is pretty well-worn, all the coins are from 1880-1918. So it looks like there was a lot of activity in the early 1900's, then no other coins (so far) except for some newer coins.

Just cannot wait to get back there....

Wow Steve!! That spot looks like it can be a goldmine! Keep after it. The coins and goodies so far are amazing!!

Looks like you found a hot spot and very nice finds!

Nothing beats that feeling you get when you find a spot that you know nobody has ever been to before. Keep hitting that spot. theres bound to be a few more treasures waiting for you.

I love google earth, great resource - well spotted.

Item definately looks Masonic

If you have only hunted the spot two days and its in the woods, its not all hunted yet!!
Looks like you got an awesome start on a virgin spot for sure!! Keep'em coming! 8) 8)

Those kind of spots are getting hard to find! Keep hunting it ...Good luck

Nice finds. That seated quarter could easily have still been in circulation well into the 1900s. My grandfather, who will be 90 this year, told me that the seated liberty design of coins were still widely in circulation throughout the Great Depression.

Wow, now that is great, congrats on finding the sweet spot and all those good keepers. Best of luck on return. Keep us informed on your finds!

:)

Doing your homework can really pay off. Don't know anything about the spot, but many times I have found multiple hotspots in a given area. Go back over the same spot real slow, and poke around looking for other little spots. Scope out the lay of the land, and figure out where people would have run and played and explored(small hills, big rocks).

Congrats on some super finds!.........HH

I agree with the reply above about finding other hotspots. In places where there is nothing left to give you an idea of how a site was used, you have to explore and put the pieces together on your own. There WILL be other hotspots where people congregated in the past there...you'll likely never know why, or what was there in that little spot, but the finds will be there nonetheless. Also...if you have a water detector, you should try the pond! Picnic groves frequently had some sort of swimming feature...and folks swam in droves! I would either get after the pond with a water machine, or wait until it is REALLY low and detect every inch of the banks that you can get to--plus as deep as you are comfortable with your land detector (the poles and coils are waterproof--the box isn't). Make sure you go all the way around the pond.

Some great finds here, and I'm certain that there are more there. GREAT WORK!
