Found a penny

So all this detecting has got me thinking about coins and their value. The last few days I have been doing some research so see what the possibilities were out there. All that aside this morning I was in the basement and I saw an old basket that we throw pennies in and I took a look, no wheats then I glance over to a cookie tin that I was pretty sure had a bunch of pennies in .Sure enough it had a bunch.I searched and searched and finally found a 1 wheatie . I ran up stairs to check the date hmmm its old enough but not in great condition,lets see what ebay has to say....... then I was like WOW WOW Then I did some more research I realized mine was not the most sought after and sadly my bubble was burst . You see I found out today that 1909s with the v d b ( just found out what that was) is very rare and worth $600 -$1,500 or more but mine 1909s not great condition might bring me 20 bucks . Don't get me wrong thats super, but boy was my heart pounding before that!!!!! My own version of V. D. B Very Dumb Blonde lol but I still had a fun morning . Vickilynn heres a pic

that is a rare coin, even in that shape I wish I had it in my collection!

HERE is what the online price guide I use has for a 1909S starting with Good condition going up to MS60

1909 S BN: 77.05 97.75 117.60 168.00 228.00 234.00 240.00 252.00 270.00 288.00

Can I ask, though, did ya..... clean it?! It sorta looks "scrubbed".. or is that just the way it was worn naturally?

Nope didn't clean it... from the can to my hand . Unless it was log ago before the can.

Yea, the 1909s is worth in that condition like $75-$80!!!!!!!

Nice penny Vicky.

The 09 s is a nice rare date. I've dug thousands of wheaties here in the NE and still haven't found a 09 s yet. Got alot of plain 09 and 09 vdb but no S. That coin is gonna keep climbing in value every yr.

As a veteran wheaty cleaner (in my youth), I will say that I believe that wheaty to show ground corrosion, as well as subsequent cleaning.

It was dug at some point and cleaned. Still a crazy rare wheaty.

That would go in the folder.

The can that it was in had alot of crappy dirty pennies stuff stuck on them from finding the in the car or under the kids bed. I believe those pennies could have been pack away anywhere from 4 to 10 years ago. Any ways my point being whoever had it before me may have cleaned it but then why spend it? Just a thought. I did scratch my finger nail on the green stuff that was on 30 % of the coins in the can.

just keep it someday even the ones not in so great of shape could be worth a lot more.

Yes Don't sell it for 20.00!!!!!!! the prices I put up 77.05 is the price for the busted up penny price!!! if you take it to a dealer to sell don't take any less then 38.00 no matter what they try to tell you...

Nice coin Vicki. I know the feeling; I had just that feeling when I found my 1909 vdb. I used to be blond when I was a kid, maybe that explains it. Congrats on the great coin!
